Amiga '2500' in 1986/early 87?

Hey all,

I was looking through some old issues of Amiga World and was looking at the A2000 launch issue (March 1987) where they previewed the forthcoming Amiga 2000 and the board shown is clearly the West German Commodore variant but curiously this rev 3 (prototype?) board is labeled Amiga 2500

Image from the magazine rotated for clarity.

How curious!

What's that daughter board with the four chips? The Kickstart ROM?

yeah that's the ROM tower, some early A2000s had them I think, maybe even some A2000B's, bit like some A3000s had one (the A3000 I had in the late 90s didn't even though it was Kickstart 1.4).

I doubt this EPROM tower was ever seen in a shipping A2000. Just something they used internally before the 1.2 ROM was finalized.

The review machine looks like a prototype, there is no serial number plate on the rear panel.

The early A3000s did have ROM towers shipped to end users.

My early rev4 from 1986 looks identical except for ROM 1.2

mine is ASSY 380705-01 Rev4 West Germany (c) 1986

Early boards are of the german variation , i.e based on the A1000 but the later boards have buster and ECS , long video slot and 1mb chip ram. More of an A500 with slots.

I used to buy the Amiga Magazine from Markt & Technik in the 80's and I remember a magazine showing an Amiga 2500 on the cover, the desktop case was anthracite not beige. Unfortunately I didn't collect the magazines, they were given away after some time.

There is some info in the Wikipedia article about Amiga 2000.

I wonder if this one was the 2500 because 2000 was reserved for the mythical Los Gatos designed A2000? :-)

It's possible I guess! It seems a rather unusual thing to just get wrong! The Rev 4 West German A2000s do have A2000 silkscreened on them, at least the ones I have seen over the years.
