You have two choices:
(1) a SCSI CD-ROM drive connected via a Squirrel SCSI adapter to your PCMCIA port, or (2) an ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM drive connected via a 4-way buffered interface to your IDE controller. Either way, you will require something else besides the drive, but £70 should cover it. |

It's not often I say this, in fact it's the first time, but shouldn't this be in the main forum and not OT

get a CF card to replace your HD and save the rest for a rainy day
CD drives on the amiga are outdated in my opinion as you have a PCMCIA adapter you realy don`t need a CD drive |

Theres quite a few cd images up on the file server and some good cd games like wasted dreams that make having a cd drive quite useful. But what you might want when they make some more is an indivision AGA but youll need a bit more money.
I had a basic A1200 like you my first purchases were a ram upgrade and PCMCIA kit. After a few months I decided to upgrade to an 030 and recently got a SCSI CD ROM. My next purchase will be an indi for sure. Have fun with your new toy! Steve |

Get the CF card option, transfer files to and from PC, use current burner software, like Nero on PC to burn backups, if you want them, use WinUAE to transfer files between machines, it's damned simple.

Personally I would suggest you invest in..
a) spare internal floppy drive b) Compact flash harddrive c) spare motherboard An IDE CD/DVD with an ide splitter won't cost you much if you fancy getting the parts together and setting it up. The SCSI CD drives c/w PCMCIA interface will probably set you back at least fifty notes plus postage. Have a look at my photo album concerning an internal IDE CD drive solution. Magno |
