Where can I get the 'Say' application for Workbench 3.0?
I had this on my 600 years ago but don't see it on my current workbench disk set. I've read on Wikipedia that it has since been removed and I can't find it on the EAB ftp or aminet.

From Workbench 1.x? Or was it 2.x ? That's what I did; narrator.device and translator.library were necessary afair. Seems that it is in my Amikit installation, too - and Amiga Forever.

You need to copy the executable from 2.05 and the "narrator.library" from LIBS:
[edit] read above this was already mentioned, you also need translator.library I also recommend using this to work it instead of the default executable found on the system, a lot more flexible. Used it a lot to create speech samples for my music back in the day: http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/speechtoy2 |

I came across the GUI version of Say from the WB 2.1 beta somewhere online a couple of years ago. Can't remember where at the moment, but I will figure it out... There is a picture of it here:

The above package from Aminet lets you change all those parameters and more, hence my recommendation.

Here's the GUI Say command from Workbench 2.1 beta v38.12. I think the versions of narrator.device and translator.library on the 38.12 Workbench disk are the same as on WB 2.04.

Thanks mark_k, Redwood. The SofTalk installer gave me the dependencies and now both SofTalk as well as Say work Happy days, thanks for all your help!

@ mark_k: I'm about four years late(!), but thank you! I've been looking for that GUI'd version of Say for a long, long time! I've had a screenshot of it for ages, but never got my hands on the utility itself.
By any chance do you have a copy of the Workbench 2.1 beta v38.12 Font prefs editor? (or even all the Prefs editors?) I've been looking for at least a screenshot of that for the Workbench Nostalgia Beta 2.1 page for quite literally decades now. I mention all this, as that particular Prefs editor has font styles that no other version of Font prefs does. For some reason, Commodore decided to ditch letting users use font styles in Workbench. BTW, for anyone else following this thread, the "spirit of the law" legal way to own a copy of the "Say" utility is to own an original of the following Workbench disk: Workbench 2.05, P/N: 367813-03 [version.library 37.71 (01/09/92)] <-- contains "Say" and required speak-handler, narrator.device, and translator.library... though not the nice GUI rendition below that Commodore would have given us all had they kept paying the license royalties for Say: Workbench 2.05, P/N: 367959-01 [version.library 37.72 (03/23/92)] <-- first version of Workbench that removed "Say" and its associated files from the disk.
