Why doesn't this work?

Code:

A$="abcde"

For I=1 To Len(A$)

N=Asc(Mid$,I,1)

Inc N

Mid$(A$,I,1)=Str$(N)

Next I

Print A$

Surely the output should be
"bcdef"

but I get either Type Mismatch (at line 3)

or

Syntax error if I space the lines out with blank lines.

Is it my logic which is wrong, or is this a bug?

Your syntax is wrong. I'll leave it to you to compare line 3 with line 5.
