I had to post this as it's really pissed me off

I won't mention any names though; as that's not right.

An EAB member contacted me about a month ago asking if he could get a copy of my collection. Being the nice / generous guy that I am, of course I gave him the URLs to the "Mega.nz" downloads.

So time has passed and I get a PM every week or so saying stuff like; I can't download from "Mega.nz", can't you just upload to the FTP etc.

I try to assist; asking what errors he's getting, of course I never get details so making it hard to help further. I try to give logical suggestions i.e. using Chrome in Incognito mode, TOR or a VPN. I then suggest MegaDownloader or Jdownloader etc. as others and myself have used these...

Also, I mention that over 1500 people now have downloaded my collection via "Mega.nz" without any issue, but he seems to think "Mega.nz" is dodgy for some reason. I mean, it's only the most popular / secure file hosting platform trusted by millions on the web... also at least 20 people have downloaded this since his original request

Then today comes along... I get a PM saying that the link I sent him to the Jdownloader "clean version" (without bloatware) is a trojan and how could I do this!!! I assure him that it's not and is probably a false positive with his virus software.

The guy seems to assume that I know nothing about IT and tells me I need to check my computer ASAP. Funny, considering that I've been a 3rd Line Technical Analyst for many different international Law and Finance firms for the past 20 years... but yup, I really don't have a clue when it comes to IT

Anyway, going forward I need to say this. Everything associated with my collection has been checked and there are definitely no virus / trojans / spyware. You can choose whether to download or not, but don't be accusing me of sending malicious files.

Sometimes I really question why I bother...

My experience for Damien's files is that you can either download over a couple of days - keeping below the daily download limit, JDownloader will stop when it reaches the limit unless you keep overriding it, in which case your IP will be banned/blacklisted. ( I'm not sure for how long )

JDownloader offers a feature which will change your WAN IP automatically, but it is not configured out of the box, and may not work with your ISP - my Virgin connection wouldn't change IP until the lease expires.

If you are in a hurry , using a VPN will work, but I found you needed to restart JDownloader after changing your connection for it to be effective, otherwise the remote servers still seemed to associate your previous IP.

It wasn't painless for me, but without using JDownloader I suspect it would have been much more difficult.

Hope this helps allay any fears, and helps the EAB member to get their collection.

@DamienD, this is astonishing and I could see no reason why you would want to damage your reputation in such a way.

I've spent the last 20+ years working in IT Security, so I am naturally cautious, even towards digitally signed "official" application installations. Prior to installing the collection on my main machine, I do admit to fully examining what your installation program did, but once I saw what it was doing had no problems installing it onto my PC or my son's PC.

If the contents were business related, I would have no hesitation installing it onto any of the circa 65k machines on my network - I would happily install it as is, but I'm not sure our Director or other senior managers would understand!

It's funny, as sometimes the "Setup.exe" provided gets flagged as a virus by some <cough> *reputable* virus / spyware / malware protection software

I mean, it's just the following simple batch file that I wrote, and then converted into an .EXE via Quick Batch File Complier

Anyway, you don't won't to see my complex DamienD's SNES DVD... [REVAMP] "batch file" that's over 888 lines long and has all sorts of temp variables set / errorlevel's / if exist's / checks / loop-backs

Damien, I tried to play Beavers but it asked to insert disk 2. How do I respond?

Here's an old reply I wrote to you about changing disks

Ambermoon supports 4 drives but to minimise disk swapping I've set these to begin with:

... DF0: = Ambermoon (1994)(Thalion)(Disk 01 of 10)(A).adf
... DF1: = Ambermoon (1994)(Thalion)(Disk 02 of 10)(B).adf
... DF2: = Ambermoon (1994)(Thalion)(Disk 07 of 10)(G).adf
... DF3: = Ambermoon (1994)(Thalion)(Disk 10 of 10)(J).adf

You should read the following, as detailed in post #2, where there's a lot of helpful information / answers to FAQ: Important Keys

Anyway, to swap disks in drives you have 2 options really (there's a 3rd i.e. Diskswapper but I won't overload you with information just yet):

Fastest method:
... Press <End> + <F1> to select DF0:, then navigate to C:\WinUAE\Games\<gamename> and double-click on the required .ADF.

Slower method:
... Press <F12> to bring up the WinUAE GUI.
... Navigate to "Floppy drives" and press the "..." next to the required drive.
... Navigate to C:\WinUAE\Games\<gamename> and double-click on the required .ADF.
The quickest method though is to use the Disk Swapper:

So to insert "Disk 2" from "Slot 2" into "DF0:", press <End> + <2>

I worry about some people sometimes, people take things they see on their screen too literal. Oh no this thing has given me a virus so it must be bad and the person who gave me it is trying to hack me. Not every virus warning is a virus, just use some common sense and double check everything.

Like you Damien I too work in IT and have seen some things that would make you laugh and maybe cry, some people should not be left alone with computers.

Technically it does have a Virus.........

Virus (1988)(Firebird)[cr Shockwave][t +6 Axxess]

Being serious though I'd ignore them. They probably want to torrent it somewhere and claim the credit

Surprised by your image selection above my friend.

I thought that you would have gone with Supremacy: Your Will Be Done.

...not the first time I've guessed wrong with images you've posted afterwards portraying "Update Packs"

Being a Global Moderator; it's part of my responsibility to read / reply to all PMs that I get sent; amongst many other things

I don't really have the option to just "not read / ignore" like normal members do.

I really doubt that; I believe it's due to this member not being adequately computer literate so...

Anyway, let's move on now... I've had my rant about the situation and am over it

Sorry for having disappointed you again . Based on your screenshots, I almost selected "Supremacy" (that I never played BitD), but A-Train is a very good "Business/Financial simulation". I would say A-Train take the good parts from "Sim City", "Railroad Tycoon", "Populous", etc. and shake them (but not stir them ). Not a game for everybody but definitively a complete game that is worth a play .
The manual is here.

I agree that A-Train is good. It's probably less well known as (at least in my opinion) it has a quite steep learning curve. It's quite hard to get things going -- and I do own the original so it's not that I didn't have the manual or anything..

To DamienD, Thank you so much for putting together this amazing Amiga Collection and being so kind and sharing.

Thanks for making the setup process and adding the addon packs so easy.

It's amazing the time you spent on this and letting others enjoy it.

It's a wonderful games collection bringing back the old memories of playing on the amiga with my brother. Spent many years as a kid playing ZX Spectrum which i loved then went to Amiga which was an amazing upgrade. Even still today 35 years later the games still look great.

First games i tried was cannon fodder then lemmings.

My Brother who ive not seen for along time is coming over next month and we will play some amiga together for the first time in 30+ years :-)

I will try to post again when i have spent more time playing with this collection.

Thanks
RetroJoe

... Rygar [AGA] --> Rygar - The Legendary Warrior [AGA]

2 new "cheats / hints / level codes / manuals / maps / walkthroughs" additions:
... A-Train
