I never understood Dragons Breath to be honest. I didn't have a manual though for obvious reasons.

I think I've vented my rage against Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the one with the overhead map) somewhere else on EAB, but I'll just repeat it here as it fits the thread perfectly
I kept playing and replaying the game with my brother and we would always reach the damn Turtle Van, and we couldn't find a way to use it. Turns out you could drive it by pressing the Numpad 0 button, which was NOT present at all on our numpadless Amiga 600! Damn developers for using such a strange key for it. Wasn't something that all Amigas had, like ENTER, SHIFT or ALT good enough for it? Another game I didn't know how to play when I first got it was Ultima VI (DOS version). I couldn't understand English well enough at the time and the manual was entirely translated in Italian - as such the keywords needed for Lord British were translated as well (and obviously didn't work in Italian! ). The manual also did nothing to tell you about that One-two year or so after I finally figured out what the bearded man wanted me to tell him to get out of that freaking castle |

i guess Darkseed.
I only ever completed it once in its entirety, because i always do things out of order. It's the only reason for the radio not sounding different on Day 2 :P it must Even going I go through the walk-though doesn't help... Drives my bonkers But i like do a challenge which is why i keep playing it. For some reason Monkey island 2 and BASS just makes more sense. |

Just spotted this thread has Feud on the first page. I never tried the Amiga version, but I did once discover a way to win the game on the Atari 8bit version with just one spell and in less than 10 minutes

Weird game. I have no idea how to play this. Are you supposed to collect the falling balls? Video: [ Show youtube player ] |

Soccer Kid...at first I didn't realise you could jump on the soccer ball to reach higher areas. I could still progress through the game but it was a lot harder.

Yes, there is recorded gameplay on youtube where gamer didn't know about same thing. Game was only average for him, I think it's brilliant if you know how to play.

I know several people who cannot play Supercars. They just don´t get to steer from the point of view from the car. And they don´t seem to understand my eplanation. Mostly they try to steer it like Pacman. And that´s a pity, because Supercars 2 is such a good two player game.

If I understood correctly there are two groups of people here
The ones who got games by copying so no documentations that is why they were lost and the others who bought the games and read the manuals and still did not understand at all Go figures I was one of the first....sorry PS:a nice example on C64:Combat School How many of you knew there were a face B on the cassette with a mission to do? How many? |

Yep, especially back then, games had very few easily identifiable visual cues, no tooltips, and often required a manual or flashcard to identify tiny graphical elements. It made it tough to play a game if you didn't have the manual (or were the type to not bother). Nowadays, with tutorial levels, floating tooltips and a lot of other hand-holding devices, you can play a game without any manual (which is just as well since they don't tend to come with them any more anyway).

Cadaver: understood nothing at first, even with the manual.
Then got it: now one of my favourites 3D-ISO adventure games. |
