Alfred Chicken

Hi,

does anyone know if the AGA version reported on WHDLoad.de to be such a helluva work to fix is a different version from the CD32 one?

I always thought that Alfred Chicken AGA = Alfred Chicken CD32/AGA, but I might be wrong, and there could actually be two of them...

Arrow Alfred Chicken AGA is the CD32 version

You are right, the AGA and CD32 versions are the same. However, they are so O/S friendly compared to the ECS disk version that it's a real pain to fix it. These system friendly games require a lot of the operating system to be active (WHDLoad kicks the entire operating system out by default which is why you have to load part of it via OSEmu or the patched Kickstart interface) to make it run.

Incidentally I would much prefer to fix a completely unfriendly game as they are a hell of a lot easier to get working in 95% of cases. Plus the WB3+ interface is not 100% complete like the WB1.3 one.

Which only partly answers my question.
I wonder if there was some AGA disk version besides another CD32 version with CD32-specific stuff added to it (control by CD32 joypad, etc.) which were both officially released by the software company.

I wonder too if the AGA version available on disks is a FIXED version FROM the CD32 with the controls mapped to some controls suitable for Non-CD32 users. (Similar to Flink.)
Got it now what my actual question was?

Actually, I think there was an A1200 disk version of Alfred Chicken, separate from the A500 and CD32 versions. The advert for Alfred in magazines seems to suggest that there is. I'll try and locate one to scan in.

Cody is right, there is an A1200 version. It's available at www.cbi.nu (check "Am" and type "Alfred" in the search field)

Cool. Thanks.
That's just what I remembered!

So ... could it be that this TOSEC name
Alfred Chicken CD32 (1993)(Mindscape)(AGA)[cr Mystic]

should actually be something similar to

Alfred Chicken A1200 (1993)(Mindscape)(AGA)[cr Mystic]

because this isn't a CD32 version at all, but actually it is the A1200 version?
I'm beginning to believe this more and more ...
As there are people that have much more insight in this techno stuff, I upped the TOSEC version on the zone.

Unhappy PS2 Chicken

Does anyone know Alfred Chicken is also released on PS2?
Two weeks ago PS2 Alfred Chicken was reviewed for in a large Dutch newspaper. It looked and played exactly like the Amiga/ Super Nintendo original and therefore it was slagged off. The reviewer’s opinion was the game was 2D = old hat. I did not expect this verdict because this very person also reviewed games like Lost Vikings and Megaman in the early Nineties. Not everyone with a long gaming experience turns into a nostalgia-freak, that’s for sure.

I haven't actually looked at the disk in question, so I am just speculating here. But in the scene days, crack groups would often release a disk-based version of a CD32 title. So in effect, that release would be neither and/or both.

It was so users without CD32 systems could play the game, since they would work perfectly on the A1200 (but without the CDDA tracks, natch). So maybe Alfred Chicken is one of those titles. I'd have to dig out the old filelists from BBS's to know for sure.

The stickers I remember seeing on the Alfred Chicken box said "A1200 Compatible".

@Andreas. Although there were certain "enhanced" CD32 titles with FMV intros etc.,I recall most of the time that the game's were often direct ports of the A1200,& in certain instances,A500/600 versions.
I'm sure that Alfred Chicken's A1200/CD32 version's will prove identical.
Am I the only person who hated that game?
I'm glad The One gave a coverdisc demo,it looked crap & didn't look great either!

No, because it is really the CD32 version. I've checked it, it has no music (because the CD32 version has cdda), it needs the nonvolatile.library and it says at the title screen: BLUE for options, RED to start. Not very typical for an A1200 game...

At least the crackers patched it a bit. On one of the special levels between levels you have to shoot. You should use secondary fire for that task. I can't recall which key it is, but one of the keys emulate that button.

Thanks WindowsKiller for checking.
Well, that would definitely gone beyond my techno knowledge (that it needs nonvolatile.library )
As I'm a different person from Toni, I do *not* like debugging so much

OK, so what we need to find now is the "real" A1200 version...

Yes, there is.

The info at CBI says that the standard version works on KS 1.3 and requires 1 MB, the 1200 version needs KS 3.0 and 2 MB.

Hmmm. Interesting, as I have never seen an actual A1200 version. Even the boxscan you have attached says "A1200 Compatible"...

Hehe...I was gonna do the same thing! But since you already buy from them, I'll let you. If it turns out to be A1200-specific, then it's worth it (since I have no scan of such a beastie and I always like fills!)

I've got the A500 version and it also says "A1200 Compatible" on the cover.

In the manual it says "CD32/A1200 versions adapted by John Jones-Steele".

Could you upload it?
It could be that there are improved graphics if you use A1200-like settings, e. g. Kick 3.0 or 3.1 and 68020.
This would be worth testing...
