Lack of appreciation for hand drawn 2D graphics

Recently, Simon the Sorcerer was released for the iPhone and I did a search around the forums to see how well it was received.

http://www.theiphoneappreview.com/08...-the-sorcerer/

These older retro games being released for mobiles are a great way to gauge what the younger "3D" generation think of older games.

While many praised the game, a large number complained about not being able to handle the "poor visuals" and "rubbish 2D graphics", expecting the game to have been updated.

Shame that many don't appreciate hand-drawn 2D works of art these days in games. I love 3D games, but they can't replace the beauty, instant learning curve and playability and feel of some hand drawn 2D classics.

Anyway, nice to see some of these games making a comeback on modern hardware.

Which seems to have poor visuals and rubbish 3D blocky characters.

LOL s2325, yesh I remember that game featuring triangle head!

Some of the people rubbishing the visuals of this game aren't all youngsters either, I read a few comments from older people saying they can't go back to gaming using "poor visuals" and have moved on.

Oh well, thank goodness we are all different and some do like these older games.

I've just downloaded Day of the Tentacle due to the AGA thread on here, as I've never played it and I love point and click adventures. Looking forward to completing it via Scumm.....

Despite the fact that I think that re-releasing the games for iPhones is just a way to make a quick buck, 'poor visuals' is funny when talking about a 320×480 screen

Different. Most annoying thing about 3D adventures is the controls, but the graphics can be very good, like on the second Simon the Sorcerer one.

Two of the top-selling Nintendo DS games in my local shop are Professor Layton and Scribblenauts, both 2D games. Gameplay over graphics!

Agreed 100% with your statement TCD. That was what put me aside from the latest "free" 3D Monkey Island adventure.

You can barely see any 'face' or 'hairdo' in it (yet it still looks nice). Handdrawn 2D and textured 3D graphics are two different things and it's a bit comparing apples and oranges. There are awful graphics both 2D and 3D (Simon 3D being a good example btw ). My main point is, that on a iPhone you can't expect to get hi-def graphics (2D-wise) anyway and I think 256 colours for the cartoonish look of Simon the Sorcerer are also fine.

It's a similar story in animated film and TV programmes though isn't it? Almost every kids' TV programme is 3D rendered now.

A damned shame...

Lack of appreciation for hand drawn 2D graphics

I totally agree.

You can even sqeeze 3d into pre-drawn landscapes to get an astounding effect...

...boy, do I miss Fallout Tactics 2 (or Van Buren, or whatever was meant to come and never saw the light)

I got the speech version and really enjoyed playing it through. Got stuck once or twice, but the internet came to my rescue. Great game! Voice acting was really good.
