It shows the difference between collectors that have to have the rarest versions of everything, and people who will settle for a copy of the game just to play it.

I don't think the price is that far off due the extremely limited distribution and low tech methods they were spread. It's surprising that there are any in this good condition almost 25 years later.

The only reason anyone would pay such a price for either of those is simply because those copies came from a very limited initial production run that was made at a time when nobody could have imagined the success that the series would enjoy. As such, a collector might consider them to be worth a mint, but only another serious collector would ever consider paying such a price. I still have my original Apple II copies of both Akalabeth and Ultima (both work fine), but those came from a larger production run that came very soon after the ones in the auction. The differences between what I bought and what was up for auction are pretty much zero except for that, but that is enough to make mine worth next to nothing to a collector. They're good enough for me though, and I'd rather spend the big bucks on something else.

Try to put them for auction then, this will lift the fog

(as you would start the auction on ebay.COM, remember to set a reserve value high enough, so that you can keep the goodie if the reserve is not met!

[You might know about the fact that we Germans on ebay.DE are NOT allowed to use reserve values at all!])
