Read me files....

So this is probably very basic and I just don’t know what I’m doing but I have several read me files on my workbench system that would be helpful to be able to read lol. If I double click I get execute a file box and enter command arguments I have no idea from there how I am supposed to open this file to be able to view it... I just get file is not executable which I already knew... so someone tell me I’m an idiot and give me the very easy answer.

I’m using classic workbench 3.1 68k version

I don't know what's available in ClassicWB, but when you double click on a file and it brings up the box to enter arguments, you could try typing "more" in front of the file.

For example, if the file is called "example.txt", change it to become "more example.txt". Alternatively, "amigaguide example.txt" or "multiview example.txt"

There's a myriad of viewers. As I said, I don't know what comes with ClassicWB to give examples related to it, but the above should be enough to get you going.

Multiview, located in the Utilities folder, should be able to open the readme files.
You can either launch mutliview first and open the files from there.
Or in the command prompt you get when executing the files, edit the prompt so that at the beginning you have "multiview " in front of the readme file name.

Readme files are text files that can be opened by various text viewer/editors. It is the same on windows/linux/macos/.... You may use your filemanager program for this if your classicwb doesn't has default support for different filetypes. You may install a text datatype if isn't installed already.

Another method is to single-click Multiview and then double-click the file you want to open while holding shift. One of those nice Amiga shortcuts that's not so well known.

Multiview needs a text datatype to open text files, but More (also in the Utilities drawer but without an icon) and Ed (in C: ) should open them without any problems.

That's pretty neat. Never knew that. Thanks for mentioning it.
