Upgrading Kickstart on an A4000

In my other thread, Im worried that my A4000 is about to die on me. Ive been looking on Ebay for a replacement, but they're all with KS 3.0.

Can I upgrade an A4000D to KS 3.1? Are the KS Chips socketed or soldered onto the motherboard?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

All socketed. Two 27C200 EPROMS.

Would it not be cheaper to get your old one fixed though?? It's probably the PSU or some capacitors that need replacing. Worse case perhaps battery leakage damage (you removed the battery I take it?)

Good idea, but

1) I dont know anyone in North America that does Amiga repairs
2) The A4000 was sold with the battery removed.

Re: A4000 dying.

Basically its an intermittent problem, but when it boots the display is slightly corrupted with vertical bars down the screen. It doesnt happen all that much, but Im worried that its going to increase over time.

I just got 3.1 ROMs for my A1200 (the same as thd A4000 I think?) and A1500 via Amiga-Digital. PM him from AmiBay. He was surprisingly cheap, and the stuff arrived after a few days well packaged.

I was thinking of just picking up a new A4000 if it couldnt be repaired and then just swapping out the KS roms with the 3.1 roms in my old machine.

Can the A4000 be upgraded to 3.1? Wow you must be new to the Amiga. I am pretty sure the 4000 was the FIRST computer to get the 3.1 upgrade. All Amigas can get the 3.1 upgrade.

Amiga Center in France is good, I have sent him some work from Seattle! He is a bit pricey and with the Euro doing better than the $ be prepared to pay.

For north America: as far as I remember, only Doomy make "fixes" on Amiga gear.

The problem: he never give your Amiga back! Sad truth.

If you live in Brazil...

We have two good guys in here.

Mugo (Rio de Janeiro)

Rogério (Rio Grande do Sul)

But the customs here is the problem: even if you manage to send an item, the costs will be prohibitive. And no chance to cash the return package.

I know! The only time I've try to send a humble AT-PSU-converted-to-Amiga to a friend in Argentina the post office ask for ~50USD! (for less than 1000km!). Put the same package to the other side of the country costs ~12USD (for ~7000km!!!!!).
