harddrive problems..
My little amiga 600 is having a problem. The harddrive is not found, i can run the hdsetup, find the disk and run the "find data on drive" thing and then the drive works alright for some time. The data on the drive is still with me and i experience no problem what so ever. But then suddenly it stops working and i gotto go through the whole process of running hdsetup again to find the drive and all the data. Pretty irretating. Is this a hardrive (hardware) problem or could it be a virus related issue?

More info needed...
- What version of the OS are you using ?
- "hdsetup utility" = HDToolbox ? - does the drive vanish while the system is running ? - ...or does the miggy fail to find it at startup ? It's certainly no virus. |

well..
The drive vanishes at startup. No problems running it when it finds the drive. I run 2.04 i think on it, i´m going to install the system once again and see if it helps...

> The drive vanishes at startup. No problems running it when it finds the drive. My first guess would be that your hard drive is too slow in "spinning up" (a hard drive needs some time to reach its full RPM speed). That's a common problem with A600/A1200 computers: The miggy scans the IDE bus for drives, but the drives are still in their startup process - so the miggy doesn't find them and thinks there are no Hard drives. When your Amiga fails to find the HD and prompts you with the "insert disk" screen, just reset the machine. If it recognises the HD *now*, you found the problem. In this case, search Aminet for some hardware hack (it's just a minor modification), to delay your Amiga's startup process (this will give the HD enough time to get ready). |

nope..
No it´s not that. I´ve got that problem befor on my a1200 and it´s always a result of a fast computer (like when you expand the 1200 with an accelerator) and the 600 is certenly not fast.
No it´s more as if the drive looses the configuration done in "hd tool box" and is completely "blank" at startup. //christoffer |

I think korodny is kind of right. My A600. sometimes, fails to power up teh HD in proper time, so it doesnt find it. Some times, it even started to spin up and down, spin up and down... last time I had this problem on the PC, teh HD died for good. On the Amiga, it fixed itself. Luckily never happened again.
If you havent used the HD for a long time, it could be that the shaft got stuck... after some tiem of being turned on, it should work. have you tried leaving it on for a good ammount of time, then resetting again? It's really a strange thing.. Try using another HD, see what happens! |

It uses to happen more to old heavy SCSI drives (read: MAC), but it could happen in those too, I suppose. If it does the spin-up/spin-down thingy, you are lucky that it didnt stay like that for good.
Tehse drives are much better than the ones I haev in my PC |

ok...
...wouldn´t a normal "cut the red wire" solution do the trick then? That way the hd will be "ready for boot" the moment you turn the power on.
Thanks for all the tips! |

I think this is the Aminet hack that Korodny mentioned.
