the st pictures do not look much (if any) worse than those of amiga... as oneshotdead pointed, number of colours is not so important (obviously )

edit: oh now i found, but it's not comparable

I never used an Atari ST.. but i hear from everyone that it was really good if not way better with MIDI then Amiga.

But what about the sound quality? .. if i hear these ST games they sound like Chiptunes? compared to Amiga with Sampled music.

Yep. It's mainly because of the soundchip the ST used : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General...ents_AY-3-8912
There are some tunes that used samples though, but I can't remember which right now

How was the ST with sampled tunes compared to the Amiga then?

Quote:
Although the chip wasn't designed to handle raw PCM data (digital sound), the effect could be simulated. The chip used a simple OR based mixing function for combining noise and tone on its three channels and could be persuaded to produce a level non-zero wave. By altering the volume this level wave could be shaped into a waveform. Obviously, this involved more CPU usage than chips designed for this purpose (such as the MOS Technology 8364 "Paula" as used in the Commodore Amiga), but it was nevertheless a technique widely used on platforms such as the Atari ST to play sampled music, and on the Amstrad CPC or ZX Spectrum to play short audio samples, in some games

Quite poor (of course ). Check if there is a Xenon 2 ST vid on YouTube. The title music uses samples IIRC.

Well, it kinda had 4 'channels' : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_S...F.2FSTM.2FSTFM
Just listen to some games on YouTube and hear the difference.

You can do cool stuff tho with white-noise. Not sure if it was very useful on an Atari ST but i certainly use it when producing trance-tracks

Atari ST sounds really awful to me but some guy on Youtube a while back was saying he thought it sounded better than Amiga, funnily enough I think that Amiga music sounds better than 99% of games today so it's probably a nostalgia thing.

There was definitely a lot more creativity back then though, all developers seem to do today is focus 99% on the graphics and then throw in some random chart tracks or other stock music at the last minute giving the games no real character of their own.

The Amiga just style of music just sounds great to me, the last modern game that I liked the soundtrack to was FF7 which had midi style music.

So when you baught a nice new shinny 16bit computer, you thaught it was real cool to have it sound like an Authentic 8 bit Spectrum ! ?

That said, when I got my Amiga, while it had awsome sounds, I found my self still firing up c64 emus or sid players to play 8bit tunes from the c64 I upgraded from .
