Indexed image (CLUT) programming resources

Does anyone know of any good resources for programming with colour indexed images?

I've been playing around with some stuff on my PC, trying to reproduce some of the cool things that PPaint used to be able to do with palettes, particularly with colour reduction. However, it seems that it is a bit of a lost art now that everything runs in 24+ bit.

Any pointers to places that might have some useful algorithms for choosing palettes etc. would be gratefully appreciated.

This isn't very deep, but it's a nice overview of common techniques (along with at least some details, pros, and cons). I hope this helps or at least gives you a better idea what to search for.

That was a really useful starting point to find what I needed. Thanks!
