Why do some games come up with this...???
Well I run a game and I have 2mb PCMICA card in the slot, but it still says "Can't allocate ShadowMem" or "Can't allocate ExpMem"
Why is that..?? Last edited by spannernick; 22 June 2012 at 18:09. |

PCMCIA is "Chipmem" .. And some games need "Fastmem"...
So best way to play is to buy a real Fastmem Board no need cpu, just 2Meg FastRam will be enough |

PCMCIA is definitely FastRAM, not ChipRAM. (Not that it's terribly fast FastRAM, but still...)
Are you on an A1200 or A600? If you're on an A600, you might need to add a trapdoor 1MB ChipRAM expansion maybe? |

So you must be using an A600 with only 1MB CHIP. |

Get a Fastram expansion (trapdoor slot). PCMCIA fastram is too slow for an A1200.

It's been a while since I looked, but I seem to recall that PCMCIA SRAM cards and A1200 FastRAM cards are in about the same price range, you might be able to do a direct swap with someone, or at the very least, a part-exchange? |

I did that for a while until I got a real FAST RAM card (MUCH better). You don't want to play AGA games that way, and they kind of expect a 1200 running at 1200 speeds.. ;-) When I was getting that error, I'd find that frequently, I could play the game if I booted with no startup-sequence and ran whdload manually for the game. Some slaves take all the memory you have (especially if you only have 2M + 2M). The other thing you can do is remove the PRELOAD (It's PRELOAD, right? Memory is a bit fuzzy) tooltype from the icon.... desiv |

I fear that PRELOAD won`t help much because it "only" preloads data if free memory is available, else it won`t. Sooner or later out of memory problems occur.

It's one of these things about whdload that really annoy me. A perfectly floppy game usable on bare machine, won't work under whdload. Even without preloading, and i know because i tried a lot of whd games when only had a bare 1200.

Most games, when booted from floppy, can and will use the complete memory as they don't use any system functions. WHDLoad has to save OS memory/vectors to be able to use OS functions, there's no way around that.

Then run them from floppies if it really annoys you that much...
