Window positions not being saved in WB

This is a head scratcher fellas...

I just noticed on my A1200 setup, after reworking it and adding some stuff like Visualprefs (which I usually avoided and I may be realizing now it was because it makes the system unstable), and noticed that after doing WINDOW->SNAPSHOT->WINDOW and going back to opening this folder after a wihile or a reboot, sometimes the action was not saved and the window is back in its old position and size.

What the hell could cause this? Like, I open a folder, it works for the first 3/5 folders, then it stops saving the changes.

System is WB3.1 on 3.0KS, running Visualprefes, PeterK's icon.library, FullPalette, FastColors, NewIcons, FBlit.

I am not sure if it is related, but I noticed PatchRAM and PatchWB do not work. Maybe because it is KS3.0? In any case I disabled those patches.

Any help appreciated!

Window positions are not saved if your drawer has no icon.

Another condition is that the parent drawer must be in "view by icon" (rather than by name, date or size).

Err, yeah, nothing stupid is going on from my side, I swear.

I just tried again. Disabled Visualprefs. Same shit, window positions get randomly saved or not when I do Snapshot.

I logged some with Snoopdos, here is an edited log (I erased most of the font access entries)

Seems like a lot of FAIL commands are related to KingCON? Could that be the issue?
I can't really see when I am saving windows either, is there any filter I should set/unset in SnoopDOS to make this better?

The filesystem on this is PFS3-AIO

Nothing stupid from your side, but some facts aren't necessarily known by everyone... (or easily forgotten !)

There is a lot of unrelated things in this output, and absolutely nothing about WB icons...
Can't you have snoopdos open a window and just display things ? It shouldn't flood you with unrelated events or if it does, wait until it gets quiet.
Then just do the snapshot. It should add something like about opening some .info - one single line.

Other possible tests :
- try in RAM:
- try after running without startup-sequence (and moving away everything in WBStartup so you can type loadwb in initial cli without interferences)

I don't know which options to hide/enable in SnoopDOS so it can show me that, I recently re-installed it and the default shows nothing from Workbench and I don't remember which options I had it set to, I do remember it showing stuff about .info but you are right that it is not shown here now. Any help regarding that appreciated.

I will try without a s-s and see what happens. I had forgotten to do that.
I kinda wonder if this is in any way related to PFS3. Anyway, this is all just stabbing in the dark. I will do no s-s and see what comes out.

I'm still using an old SnoopDos version so it doesn't help, but you may try typing "snoopdos ?" to see available options. In your case, simple output window will tell more than a log file.

Checking if this is related to PFS3 is easy - just try in ram disk.

When you say it randomly saves or not... does that mean the very same drawer is sometimes saved and sometimes not ? Or are some drawers always saved when others never are ?

In addition to window positions, are options such as "view by" saved correctly or not ?

Yes, I noticed that some times the same folder will save or not, randomly.
I didn't touch "view by" but it looks the same throughout.

Pure speculation, but might there be some sort of cache issue due to the combination of file system, KS3.0 and WB3.1? Trying it with a 3.0 boot floppy should let you rule out the 3.1 install anyway.

What? PFS3AIO on WinUAE? It sometimes saves the changes, some not.

After making the changes open another drawer, it uses to work to save later the changes after a reboot.

Sometimes even editing the s-s from booting it won't do it if you just reboot, so you have to edit the s-s twice in the same booting and it will save the changes.

SnoopDOS "Show functions" (see menu) should look like this to get the info you need:

Read the original topic thoroughly before posting.
I run a real Amiga setup, not WinUAE.

daxb, thanks, I'll try that!

Maybe you should too, you didn't say it wasn't emulation. Apart of that I was asking if you were using it on WinUAE.

Sometimes telling your complete specs avoids posts that in the other hand just try to help you.

I gave my complete specs, whether you understood it or not. You implied a WinUAE possibility even if this isn't even posted in an emulation forum. So because I DIDN'T mention WinUAE (why would I?) it is implied it could be? Maybe you can also imply I tried this on a Spectrum ZX too

Read again: "my A1200 setup". Not "my WinUAE setup". Pretty clear.

Well I have bad news, it seems like the issue goes away as soon as I disable PeterK's icon.library. So I'll take this issue to his thread in hopes he can figure it out

At least you've whittled the issue down, and it might be good news in that there could well be a big fix of the library soon for everyone

Yeah, I don't recall this issue happening before.
What I have been doing for MONTHS now, whenever I have a little free time, is resize/move/reorder the folders of all the games in my WHDLoad collection, which is a pain in the ass, but hey that's me being an order freak

And I didn't have this issue until now when I did a system overhaul, updated libraries and software, installed visualprefs etc., so I am pretty sure an older version of the library doesn't cause this.

I guess it's a general rule of thumb that I ignored that updating a lot of system-level components at the same time is a really bad idea if you ever end up landing on an issue, as it'll be harder to determine what caused it :P
