The length of the file names is given by the type of File System

OK.

I'm seeing in HDToolBox that each partition has a unique name. Can this be changed afterwards?

EDIT: I don't think it really matters, I'll just use the defaults.

Yes, as on Windows there is the name Volume and name of Disk or Partition, you can change the name, nothing happens and does not create conflict between various mounted Hard Disks, even if it is better to give different names.

if it can interest you, here's how Instal Smart File System (SFS)

I was thinking of the device name when I created the partition (as in UDH0). Can that be changed, or should I think carefully about what I'm going to call the HDF just in case I cannot change it afterwards?

Actually you can give any name to Disk and Partition without any problem.
Even volume name can be changed, just that in the preferences you save "SYS" instead of "DH0, System etc.." in this way no name will be searched in the startup-sequence.

HDF access is done by Amiga filesystem, there is nothing that UAE can or can't do.

It may be some 3.1 ROM filesystem limit (or depend on geometry), test if anything changes if you point filesys path in UAE hardfile dialog to newer one. (Or use RDB mode and install it in RDB)

Thanks, Toni.

And thanks to you, AmigaSystem, I now know how to create better HDF files!

Where can I rename the partitions? HDToolkit? And will it be safe to do so without requiring a reformat? And can they be the same as the volume label? You said that, but I just want to confirm.

UPDATE: Yep, it was HDToolkit, and it was easy.

Thanks again, AMIGASYSTEM!

I think you mean 2 gigabyte, right?

One query: I have my HDF files set up in the following way, and each folder has one .UAE config that points to it:

Code:
|
+---@ AMIGA 1200 Games
| AMIGA 1200 Games.hdf
|
+---@ AMIGA 1200-030 Demos
| AMIGA 1200-030 Demos.hdf
|
+---@ AMIGA 4000-030 Demos
| AMIGA 4000-030 Demos.hdf
|
+---@ AMIGA 4000-040 Demos
| AMIGA 4000-040 Demos-A.hdf
| AMIGA 4000-040 Demos-B.hdf
| AMIGA 4000-040 Demos-C.hdf
| AMIGA 4000-040 Demos-D.hdf
|
+---@ AMIGA 4000-060 Demos
| AMIGA 4000-060 Demos.hdf
|
And the device name and volume label for each HDF (on the Amiga side) is the name of the HDF file after the Amiga model number. I just have the single System.HDF (ClassicWB) that is used with all of these.

What I noticed, when I was moving from the standard HDF files to the RDB mode ones, is that HDToolkit needed to save the changes I made to the partition, etc. I did so, but I'm wondering where they're stored: on the HDFs themselves, or within ClassicWB? I'm worried that if it's the latter, it could cause confusion by switching back and forth.

RDB is stored is at first block. It's something like MBR on PC, but partitions are not in RDB, they are in linked list for which 1st partition block position is written in RDB. Block with RDB starts with "RDSK" if you look with HEX editor.

Just don't forget after you change something in input box to press Enter when you finish typing data.
