Choosing filesystem

Hi,
i have a A1200 with 060/128mb fast ram and a FastATA 1200 MK-II + 100G 2.5" 4200rpm 8mb cache Toshiba hard drive not installed yet.
At first, there are more filesystems available than FFS, which one should i use? Or maybe which is more suitable for archive, ibrowse chache, games, work etc partitions, when using multiple filesystems?
Also, will it make sense to use more memory for disk buffers, than by default? Will it speed things up? Don't care about eating up free memory.
What would be the 'common sense' size limit for partitions?

You'll need two partitions, one FFS, the other whatever you choose.

SFS is a good one. Not sure which version to recommend.

It's upto version 1.247 at the time of writing, but I am not sure that is the best one to use?

Some games require FFS (e.g. Ambermoon / Amberstar) so you'll need one partition (not necessarly boot) for games.

I may have only load and play a little with AmberMoon, since upgrading to SFS from FFS, but i've not seen any problems...

What are the symptoms?

Strange.

The Settlers is also mentioned there, and that's the game i've tested even more precisely - works fine with loading, saving and stuff.

Although - to get even more off the topic, i use the original "system-booted" version from the WHDLoad archive, since that version just exits after the configuration screen... oh, well can't have everything .

@alexh: these articles are two years old. SFS has seen big improvements since then. Also the articles are speaking of PFS and not about SFS. Saying that Settlers does only work with FFS is not very significant if you don't event try SFS.

I've used PFS2 and nowadays PFS3 for about 8 years now with no complaints at all.

Some people have reported spectacular failures with them, but that's never happened to me.

All my drives are one big partition.

I have been using PFS2 and later PFS3 since the time it was available. I had several problems in the past, but none of them was unsolvable and there were by far not as many as with FFS. And I had no problem at all since I installed the latest update (18.5 IIRC).

I've been using PFS3 for quite a while ( Amithlon setup )
Once its working I like it a lot.
Maybe a little less prone to fragmenting than SFS?
Maybe a little faster too...

Serious bugger to set up on my system, but at least I havn't lost any data as all failures have been at the installation stage.

I really like the .recycled folder in SFS (I renamed it to .deleted - the word "recycled" has been permanently soiled by MS). Lots of times I accidentally delete a file and in SFS I can quickly get it back. With FFS, I had to run Disksalv to undelete and it takes forever on a large partition. I also like how in SFS, an interrupted write (because of power failure or crash) doesn't require a long validation like in FFS.

The only problem - SFSsalv requires HUGE amounts of RAM when used on large partitions. I can't use it on my 3Gb Work partition because it always says "not enough memory". I hope that partition doesn't get screwed up, because I won't be able to fix it.

I'd like to try PFS3 - where could I get it?

Bah! PFS3 comes on CD-ROM so it's no good for me - I don't have a CD-ROM on my Amiga.

It's expensive too - $59.95 US, plus shipping, plus exchange, plus customs - it would end up being over $100 Canadian. Unless it has a huge advantage over SFS, I don't think it's worth it. When is the last time it was updated? Is there an official website?

Speaking for myself I'd say PFS3 is better than SFS, but not enough to justify the kind of money you're looking at paying.

Sometimes you can be lucky enough to find such software on e-bay or with old computers going cheap...
