Horizontal Sprite Position Confused!?

Just playing with some sprites at the moment and totally confused over the horizontal position. The HRM says the sprite can be any position on the screen horizontally, but there is only a byte value for this. How can this be if the screen is 320 pixels wide + window start position?

Am I missing something obvious here?
