Stereo to mono

From a stereo AIFF sample 16 bits, how to extract the left and right channels into two separate samples? Is there a simple tool, a cli command?

Thank you. I've searched for a solution this week. The only one I've found is SOX. But it seems that the frequency is not simply copied into the final sample. This seems to require resampling.
