3D platformers

Since teh misses little lad decided to blow his pocket money on Mario Galaxy 2, i've started to take note of a section of the platforming genre that, up until now, i've avoided with a 100 foot cattle prod.

Granted, some are fairly recent but there are a vast number from ye olde times that I wouldn't mind takin a look at.

I've got vague memories of a few random or obvious ones like Spyro or Mario 64 (Dave Perry throwing his toys out of his pram comedy gold!), but, if I do grab some romulaNZ, which ones are really worth a look?

Jak & Daxter 1 (PS2) is the best one I've played so far. Difficult but not too difficult, large colorful worlds and plenty to do in each of them. Quite funny also.

Jak 2 & 3 were quite terrible IMO. Who in their right mind turns a cute platformer into a scifi shooter game :/ Basically a Ratchet & Clank look alike but done worse :/

Ratchet & Clank, also a good game series by the way. Quite a challenge.

Fur Fighters, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast (SA1 is on Xbox Live and PSN now).

Although these are early examples but ones I used to play a bit back in the day.

Conker's bad fur day is one of my fav games of all time.

Rare were awesome in their Nintendo Days.

Conkers works fine on N64 emulators also

Yes, Rayman2 was great! And if you don't mind not so real-3D, you should try SEGA's Bug! games. Very challenging platformers with huge levels, containing much secrets to explore...
As you can only move left/right or up/down (into the screen) on those "roads", it feels like a 2D game, which just happens to have more walking directions.
Those roads can make for a crazy maze too, sometimes.
Available for Sega Saturn or PC, best used on Win95....

A lot of isometric platformers on Amiga - Virocop, Spindizzy worlds and many others. But these are not really 3D in your point of view I would think.

Well I'd go with the Ratchet & Clank series. Challenging, but usually not too frustrating, well made and fun to play! Really a good series of platformers.

As for non-3D, anyone that never played Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 on SNES/Megadrive(Genesis) missed great games in the platformer genre they are favorites of mine.

There are many other releases that came out on different platforms after that, but didn't play them so I don't know if they are any good.

Amazing game; although it basically only does it with terrific level design and good art direction. And it is getting a sequel finally.

'Although'??? Don't think the controls suck that much and what else should a game do to be 'worthy' enough? Although...
