Yeah we had them... only when we had no work to do and revision days though. We used to bring our machines in and have massive Worms tournaments

Got a few teachers interested and leaving them old BBC and Archimedes computers for a while...

I wish we had...but, well, was a bit late for that anyway. I left school in 2003.
We had fancy Flatscreens and PCs running WinNT. I think about 100 - 150 of those, I have never seen ALL computer-rooms from the inside. And before you ask: it was a technical school with focus on IT.

Black and green screened things too. And then early PCs. We used to play Carmen Sandiego and maths games on it, and got our thrills by secretly installing Wolfenstein without the teacher knowing. I wish we had an Amiga though.

We also only had monochrome-8086-based PCs from Commodore, but i had a lot of fun in the pascal-tutorial.

I think the problem for schools was:-
a) that they always had a limited budget
b) that the person spending it was not a computer person
c) that more often than not the kids had more advanced machines at home.

I started with a Dragon 32. I then moved up to a BBC Model B and the "joys" of BBC Basic programming. Then I upgraded to a brand new Amiga 500 Plus with extra memory, the graphics of which put the BBC Model B to shame. I also got a 1.3 emulator which allowed me to play the games that the Plus couldn't play. I upgraded again to a Pentium 90mhz PC and used the WinUAE emulator.

Currently, I have a 3Ghz PC on which I am still using the WinUAE emulator, so I have the benefits of both machines and get the opportunity of playing the best games. Oh the joys!!

My primary school had an A500 in the Year 5 classroom - this was several years before I got my first A500 though... I remember being quite jealous - I never actually got to use it, and some of my friends who owned Amigas and who were in that class came in an played games at lunch time/before school.

There were also a few (presumably high-end) Amigas on the uni network (although I never actually saw them). There were a few computers listed in the host file that were running AmigaOS. I think they were being used at the School of Art.

Of course My school didn't back then they were were still using mechanical adding machines and typewriters in offices

Schools had books about these machines of the future , you know like the " Colossus "

Which was described as a Top secret military project from WWII and wasnt made officially public knoledge till 1989

Now wheres my sliderule gone too ? I need to calculate how big it would have to be to replace an A500 using valve technology & its own power station to fire it up

My primary school had C64s (early 80's)
My first high school had Apple II's (~87-88)
My second high school originally had C64's & IBM PC-Jr's, (~89-90)
then upgraded to 286's (~90-92)
I think they upgraded again shortly before I finished, or maybe after...

In each case, they only had a few, ie one roomful.

the media department in our school (secondary school) had amigas, I only found out later by chance as I didn't take any media subjects, it was awsome to see a whole classroom of amigas! Oh and they were bolted down unlike the macs and pcs, people knew what to steal in those days

Nope, no amigas at school. I’m guessing they really didn’t fit the network+ student lock down harware/software combo.
We had some 286/386 PCs in some weird tokenring network if memory servers. Ran on some obscure schoolpatch/novell/ + windows 3. A pretty enthusiastic teacher was showing us the international (school) network. Wasn’t until some 3-4 years later I figured out that there’s a thing called internet.

No Amigas, as even the earliest home computers were only a "pie in the sky" dream at the time. No other type of computer either, if for no other reason than that our school lacked any large free space that could be converted into a computer room, and even if it had, the costs of installing the extra air conditioning that would be needed would have been too high to afford. We did have one teletype that could be used to connect to a mainframe that the school district owned via a 110 baud acoustic modem, but that was the extent of our computing capabilities. Hard to believe that's the environment where I got my first taste of programming, actually.

Reminds me of one of my friends... He's mid-40's, & when he went to uni, they had computers programmed by punchcards. They had a processor time quota, but he & his friends found out that if you deliberately caused your program to crash, you could exceed the quota in 'cleanup' code (which could be the continuation of your main code...)
In a week of using this trick to generate Traveller universes, they blew the entire department's quota for the year...

Nothing at the elementary school, of course that was a Catholic and private school so only salt-n-pepper cords and white shirts for me and of course the wooden rulers
