Question Creating a bootable CD32 Disc

As I was playing Super Skidmarks on the CD32 I got thinking. What if you could create your own custom CD to load your own demos and games you've created and burn them to a CD which would boot from the CD32. I don't want to copy CD32 Discs I want to create my own bootable disc. That would be pretty awesome I reckon but the big question is is it possible? I've a feeling I read somewhere that all CD32 Discs use a special custom bootblock which is like some sort of copy protection code from Commodore. I've not tried to burn my own CD32 Disc yet as I thought I'd wait to see what you guys say before I waste a CD.

Hooooo Aaaaaah

Cheers Ian. Looks quite interesting. I'll have a proper read of it tonight. I'd rather burn the disc on my PC than under WinUAE using MakeCD though. Still thanks for the link.

Hey Ian do you know that Vin Diesel has actually created his own games software house with the millions he's made from movies. I've no idea what he's called the company though. Maybe Vin Games or something.

To create a bootable ISO image you need to use the ISOCD program from the CD32 Developers software. It won't work if you copy CD32.TM/CDTV.TM into the c: directory (I wasted a few CDs myself doing this).

It looks like the TM files are not physically part of the ISO9660 filesystem (they aren't needed in c they are placed at the very front of the ISO image before the actual files are stored.

I'll upload the necessary files to the zone now (ISOCD.zip)

Nice tip. Thanks.

Great. Thanks mate. I'll try them out tonight. My aim is to create a bootable CD32 version of Capital Punishment which doesn't seem to work for me under WinUAE. I'll let you know if it works. I just hope the CD32 has enough RAM for it.

Question Time to revive this thread....

Well I'm still trying to create a bootable CD. I've now got the IsoCD program from the zone and I also have both the CD32.TM and the CDTV.TM. I've had a play with IsoCD and managed to get it to create an image of a game I want to burn to a CD for use on a CD32.

Is the image that IsoCD creates an actual standard ISO file? The reason I ask is because when I tried to burn the image using Nero it came up with a "Foreign Image Settings" window as though it didn't recognise that the file is using the ISO9660 standard. Maybe it isn't. Anyway I didn't touch the options and left them as they were and burned the CD. Needless to say it didn't work. Has anyone successfully burned an IsoCD image file using Nero or another tool? What options did you use?

Here are some of those bewildering options.

I do, only I have never had to use IsoCD, nor create a bootable CD.

CDRWIN is a good Windoze tool for dealing with ISOs.
It's freely downloadable (but only burns at 1x unless you register).
Great for creating ISOs with custom bootblocks etc (made a Win2k CD with SP3 built in, & still with the correct boot behaviour), so should be able to burn ISOs that have custom bootblocks.

btw... Does anyone have that isocd.zip on a ftp, or able to put on the zone?

Ah thanks. I've used CDRWin in the past but either didn't like it or couldn't work it out so I stopped using it. I remember downloading a program called Alcohol 120% instead to burn a CD from a .BIN file. It worked perfectly and was very easy and straightforward to use so I kept it. You can download a trial version of this excellent tool here:

http://www.alcohol-software.com/

Anyway when you mentioned CDRWin it got me thinking and I realised that I still have the Alcohol 120% software still on my hard drive. So I loaded it up, selected write CD image and selected the ISO file. Unlike Nero it automatically set all the options for me and then wrote the custom CD perfectly. At last, it worked!!

I'm now going to have some fun burning my own custom built CD32 CD's. Thanks for your help.

Actually the CD I wrote using Alcohol 120% didn't quite boot properly on my CD32 but it was recognised and so it half worked. But that's another story entirely and you can read more about this new obstacle in this thread:

I've uploaded it to the zone for you complete with both the CD32 and CDTV Trade Mark files.

Could anyone upload the IsoCD.zip and CDTV.TM files to the zone again?
