Broken A600 hd

Hello everyone,

after a long
period of abstinence i have some time to dedicate to Amiga and retrocomputing in general.

I have obtained an amiga 600 with a 2,5" Seagate ST9235AG internal hard drive.

Unfortunatly the Amiga didn't booted the first time, but after several retries it loaded wb ( http://images.wikia.com/compvter/it/...miga-600-b.jpg ) where i saw protracker, hippoplayer and a drawer called "Moduli". After i double clicked Moduli ( sounded interesting to me, maybe that amiga was used to create music ) i obtained some hdd error, a crash and i have been unable to boot anymore.

Now i have tried to connect the hd to the pc via an usb adapter.

Does someone can confirm me that it is possibile to at least create an image ( using for example gnu ddrescue with system rescue cd ) of an amiga hard drive?

I'm not talking about reading the content, but only about raw copying as much hd as possibile to a file.

When i plug it i obtain a lot of errors

And nothing else. Maybe i will try to freeze it.

Also dd_rescue reports nothing, since the hd is recognized as a 1 512-byte hardware sectors (0 MB) .

Thank you in advance.

There is a linux "driver" for Amiga FastFileSystem, but since I'm not in the "L" World (bad joke, I know)...

But yes, dd can help you. Better use an Amithlon CD (boot from it) and then dump the HD contents to a Linu* partition.

I know there is a filesystem driver ( affs iirc as mount type ). And yes, in fact you confirm i should be able to read that hd, so it's only a (big) hardware problem.

I don't have Amithlon, but i don't even need it.

maybe it takes a few power cycles of the drive to get it to spin up properly. winuae can make a hdf image if thats of any use.

A couple:

buy a new 2.5" HD and install ClassicWB on it. Bloodwych's work is fantastic ans spares you a lot of time.

BTW: what ROM version you have on your 600? If 37300, only 40Mb HD would securely work (I have lucky and mine works with a IBM 2Gb unit).

If 37350, any HD up to 2Gb works flawlessly. And even some IBM 6.5Gb will be recognised!

I ask suggestions about how to read the content of the broken hd.

I'm really curious about that drawer containing songs, and i have no idea about how to recover the content . I have tried everything i know.

Thank you for the hints about kickstart version, i remember that problems. And iirc with 37299 hd didn't work at all.

Btw, I have tried ClassicWB some time ago ( years... ) and it was beautiful. And i'm sure now will be even better.

And it is.

If you want a bunch of songs, I will compress my "tiny" mods drawer...

The little compressed archive was about 45Mb last time I did this...

Find someone with 3,5" <-> 2,5" adapter and connect drive that way.
Second, download seagate diagnostic stuff called SeaTools and check drive with it.
Third. Do not buy any hdd. Use CF<->IDE adaptor. Better, faster, etc.
Best image can be done using 'dd if=/dev/sdf of=file_image'.

Yes, make an image of the drive in some other computer (or in the Amiga if no drive imagers for pc/linux can't handle ffs, I don't think there's a disk imager for Amiga at least), and then get a $10 2.5" to CF adapter off eBay + a $30 2GB CF card, then throw the harddisk away.

I got DriveImage XML from Runtime Software for my PC recently, ask them if they know about ffs. Excellent software from that company

i have just received the 2.5" - 3,5" adapter ( for only 4 € including shipping, but it took 2 weeks ), plugged it on a pc, launched gnu ddrescue, and recovered almost everything

Only 350kb or so out of 200Mb are lost due to disk problems. It took about 1 hour to read everything, but it has been worth.

Btw, mods were few but i have never heard them. Zone?
