A500 No Sound
Just tested an A500 I got from Ebay. Now, the price was excellent so not fussed about refund etc.
I set it up using my 1084s monitor and the audio cables. Problem: there is no sound. Well, not entirely true, if I turn the volume to max, there is something there. Now, I know the monitor, cables and game are fine as I use these with my A1200. Is the Paula chip and easy replacement job? Could there be another problem? Graphics etc. all seem to be working fine and I was able to play the game. Hope someone can help. Badders. |

So you're connecting the 500's audio up to the monitor? Or through separate speakers?

To the monitor. I had my 1200 connected and was writing ADFs to floppies. I then disconnected the 1200 and connected the 500. Nothing was removed from the monitor end.
I just plugged in the L and R audio cables into the necessary outputs on the 500. I even tried the mono output and got loud crackling. This made me assume the sound chip was faulty / dying / dead. |

Maybe the sound chip in your 500 is loose? I'm not sure what else it could be. If it's not loose, then perhaps it's on its last leg. If you don't mind spending the extra money to get it fixed and being parted with it for a while, I would recommend the repair center in France or the guys at this website:

Thanks I'll check them out.
I'm also watching another one on Ebay, only £5 at the moment. Could be handy for spares. Badders. |

Well, I've opened her up and all the chips are securely in place. I've cleaned out a load of dust, and checked for sign of anything having blown. It looks fine.
First time it's been opened too, the warranty stickers were still in place. Will try again shortly, maybe opening it and pressing the chips / cleaning the dust fixed it. You never know. Badders. |

Check -12v on your power supply.

Good luck. God knows how frustrating it was for me to get my 1200 completely up and running. Now she's doing quite well. Have faith haha.

Hi,
I was using the exact same power supply on the 1200 5 mins before I set the 500 up, and again afterwards. Thanks for the suggestion. |

Tried again after the cleanup. Still the same. It is producing sound, with the monitor turned up max, it can be heard.
Does the A500 require amplification if using the phono outputs?? Sound like a silly question really. Badders. |

There is an amplifier in the 1084S (which I assume you have tested?).

All I can think of is the DACS have a reference voltage, perhaps this is screwed?

Possible problem could be a missing 12V (maybe bad or worn out solderpoint on the psu connector from plugging in/off too many times), some dead filter capacitor, or a partly damage Paula chip, which I don't think. I think it is the missing 12V or capacitor.
You can try looking at the A-500 schematics to repair the problem. |

I picked up a 2nd A500 on Ebay for £20. This one is advertised and fully working. If ok, I'll use the duff sound one for spares.
I'll also check out schematics and see if the problem can be found / fixed. Can't hurt to have 3 working Amiga |
