It's mentioned at:

http://www.ifrance.com/ninjaw/cd32/_...rospective.htm

E.S.S. Mega (Coktel Vision):

It stands for European Space Simulator, and it is probably the single most obscure CDTV title released.

And it deserves to languish in obscurity. Believe me, you don't want it. The execution is downright trashy. Except for some 3D modeling, and around 10 CDXL sequences in the space database, the graphics in this space sim are barely above C64 level. The game begs for extravagant sound, and the cover promises 300 megabytes of hi-fi music. But I couldn't coax anything more
from it than the "boop" of the controller button presses and the bright click of the countdown.

There is evidently some depth to the game. You equip the space shuttle with cargo, crew, and energy - were you aware that the shuttle has lasers? - and then get to launch, pilot, and land it (on a "shuttle carrier"). You send up and maintain satellites, and you build and manage a space station.

The program gives you little help along the way. E.S.S. Mega has no presence - the lack of sound kills it - and you never get the feeling that you're playing it so much as playing with it. And without ever having fun.

Bottom line: D-. Changes: NA. Rarity: Very hard to find. CD32: Yes.

Digging up an old topic here, but if anyone still wants a copy/info on this game I can provide it since I got this title off ebay.

Unlike the review points, it does indeed have 300MB of CDDA (well, ~22 minutes actually) apparently composed by the demo scene musician Moby!

Nice one, mk1. But why on filefactory, isn't working proper here.

Edit: Aah, just found another source.

Couldn't get it to run in WinUAE either with various versions and different configs. Works on real CDTV. Thanks for sharing mk1

I guess the problems are related to the disc structure. If you look at the size of the disc on Windows it's no more than 1.5MB but it actually contains a lot more data, like all the 200MB of animations. I really don't know where this data is located at.

EDIT: There's also the PC version on the disc.

Confirmed. Windows CD low level system is stupid, again. Reading data sectors between 1.5M and end of data track returns NO ERROR but also "number of bytes read" return value is zero.. (WinUAE only checked error code, not bytes read)

Raw read (IOCTL_CDROM_RAW_READ) does return correct data AND also always returns ERROR_IO_DEVICE!

-> Workaround: if number of bytes read equals zero without error, then try raw read and ignore error code.. -> ESS Mega works...

ADDED: 1.4.5 has partial fix (partial because it requires Vista. IOCTL_CDROM_RAW_READ can't be used to read standard mode1 data tracks under older Windows versions.. Still looking for better solution..)
