AmigaONE X1000 successor coming, AmigaOS to get SMP support

A-EON Technology, the company behind the AmigaONE X1000, has not exactly been sitting still. They're hard at work developing the successor to the Nemo motherboard (which powers the X1000): it's called Cyrus, and is built around Freescale QorIQ processors, ranging from 32bit 1.5 Ghz (the P3) to 64bit 2.4 Ghz (the P5). Users have been invited to join the beta test programme for this new board, which will eventually power the successor to the X1000. On top of that, A-EON will invest $1.2 million in their partnership with Varisys, the company that builds the Amiga hardware.

Hyperion, the company that develops AmigaOS, hasn't been twiddling their thumbs either. The biggest hurdle the AmigaOS 4 developers are facing right now is SMP, but work on this issue is progressing.
One of the major hurdles right now, as AmigaOS Development Team Lead Steven Solie implied, is getting the AmigaOS Exec-kernel to support multiple CPU cores. As part of the process, a new so called "scheduler" is being implemented. The new scheduler is apparently already running in the current, internal builds of AmigaOS although Steven suggested there will be room for improvement and optimizations prior to an official release. AmigaOS 4.2 will also introduce the Gallium3D WinSys API for hardware accelerated 3D graphics.

As always with these niche products built by and for enthusiasts, it's hard to tell where it will lead to. However, fact remains that the X1000 was apparently a big enough of a success for A-EON to invest into the next generation, and for Hyperion to continue work on getting AmigaOS to support SMP - something that only benefits A-EON's machines.
While everyone else is whining about iOS and Android, the Amiga people are still doing their thing. You have to respect that.

Of course us Amiga people are still doing our thing. On Amigas, those computers from the 80s and early 90s with 68k processors.

Hyperion's clone is interesting, but I don't think people will switch to it unless they dump the expensive hardware.

Not really sure why they are bothering with a 32bit version, might as well just go with 64bit.

save this utter nonsense for amigaworld ,this is the real amiga forum .

and considering how the world is going at the moment with very few people with money to burn , I think it will be dead before it even starts , worse to come soon as inflation wil take hold and that will bring even more unemployed and heartache and pain to millions.

I had sam ppc I thought it was utter crap sold it and brought a nice 4000 which I still love and have sex with every night.

LOL that's what they said about the X1000 and A-Eon sold more than enough to fund it's successor. Trevor is a smart business man and always said that if the X1000 was a success (financially that is) then more products would show up & he's kept his promises so far

for what it's worth, I have an X1000 and A1000 and A1200( soon to be 060) and wouldn't get rid of either of them. For the other part let's just say I've got my real Amiga for that

I understand what your saying but the trouble is its just an emulator , if they actually ported every bit of software over to actual run on the fast hardware I would buy 1 ,deluxe paint and all that goodness ,but they don't and new softare for it is crud I don't want to pay 2 million pounds for just an os , I want more than that ,and my real amiga 4000 gives me hours of pleasure when they ppc os4 bored me poopless might aswell stick to a real pc .

at the end of the day its what ever a person fancy's but I just like all the old amiga software its still so powerful even in todays world ,where ppc stuff is basically crud knockoff second rate poop.

and im stroking my 4000,s mouse right now ummmm yeah baby she give me pleasure.

Indeed, I agree with both points. Im a classic person, but after using PPC on a daily basis for the last 4 years its not all bad.

The simple fact is, the X1000 is a nice machine. Rock solid and very stable (yes stable). E-UAE is full speed too, so emulation is sorted.

I know this is a classic forum, but its stupid to basically tell NG Amiga people to get lost, this is a classic forum.

That's not a fact, that's your opinion. For me, the X1000 is just a ridiculously overpriced computer that's completely underpowered and has absolutely nothing to do with Amiga at all.

I hate this you have to be one or the other in the Amiga world. FFS they are computers! Enjoy what you enjoy.

And I don't like it when people present their opinions as facts. Opinions about completely subjective topics, such as something being nice.

No, you don't. Amiga is split up in Amiga hardware and AmigaOs, and you can certainly enjoy both. Just keep in mind that they have little to do with each other: You don't have to run AmigaOs software on an Amiga, and you don't need an Amiga to run AmigaOs.

Have you used an X1000? It is the fastest computer system ever that runs AmigaOS natively.

Do you realise the amount of money that it took to develop the AmigaOne X1000 computer? We are talking 6 figure sums, which needs to be accounted for in the price. No one is getting rich from this.

The X1000 was created for the sole purpose of running the Amiga's OS and applications. It has everything to do with modern Amiga computing.

To amigakit.com:

The point of the post you quoted was to show that it's an opinion that an X1000 is a nice machine, not a fact as the poster I replied to claimed.

No, I haven't, because I'm not interested in AOS 4.

Yes, I realize that.

In my opinion it hasn't. It has to do with AmigaOs based computing. Amiga and AmigaOs/derivatives are two separate platforms. One is hardware based, the other software based. Amiga doesn't equal AmigaOs. Like I said, you don't have to run AmigaOs on an Amiga, and you don't need an Amiga to run AmigaOs. That's why they're two different platforms.

Wow, another ship storm brewing.

Maybe a little rant... hehe...

@ Thorham - I fully agree with everything you said. I can run MacOSX on my PC, using real hardware, but that doesn't make my PC a Mac (thank god!). This new machine is almost 'Amiga in name only'; its doesnt have anything Amiga specific at hardware level; not even the ability to plug in an original 880k DD drive and play disk games. E-UAE may be as perfect as WinUAE but it does not make the machine an Amiga, just as Ferrari tyres on a Ford Escort doesnt make it a Ferrari.

Secondly, I've seen OS4 and thought it was not much of an upgrade from OS3.9 except for a few extra tools and mac-like features. I certainly wouldn't upgrade to have it. Now if they make AOS 4.3 68k compatable, then certainly I would check it out in Winuae and have a super fast OS, but I wouldn't buy an expensive new machine just to find out.

I have an i7 3770k with 8 cores - which I need for heavy-duty video editing. Does the X1000 excel at video editing like the videotoaster card? Can it do multi-channel streaming of live footage with gfx overlays like the analogue hardware could do on the old Zorro machines? Can you compose music on it using Trackers or Composers? Can you draw and animate with DPaint or an equivalent? No. None of those three original Amiga top-selling points are covered on the X1000; which makes it just an adding machine / a basic word processor.

With the Minimig and stuff out there which is much cheaper and more closely related to actual Amiga hardware, I'd personally go with that.

Just my opinion.
