F/A-18 Interceptor

Just watched Top Gun today, and one of the tunes had the exact same sample (some kind of synthetic bell) used in F18 interceptor title tune.

Coïncidence ? the movie was out first

@Jeff
It's not a coincidence - have a look at the trivia in the notes of the HOL entry!

http://hol.abime.net/469

If you're a real fan of the game, then you'll probably enjoy this 2004 interview with coder Bob Dinnerman.

Title screen looks like the shots in the movie too. Great hommage to the movie which isn't so bad after all.

I used to love playing Interceptor. Got it bundled with the Batman pack. That sound effect/sample always reminded me of Top Gun. Brilliant game.

Would be interesting to know if it was CPU power friendly on purpose or by happy accident.
At the computer shows, when they were showing off 030/040 cards I never understood why they didnt have the game running, pretty much everyone who had an Amiga has played F-18
1990 irrc my neighbour had a 2000 with a 030 card, I was amazed at how fast it played

That was my game of the summer of 1988. Which was kind of my summer of the Amiga as well..

What a great time, what a great game...

Famous red bridge.
It just calls to fly under it!

Is there a patch for this game, that on faster machines, game runs smoother, but not speeding actual game time?

This was probably my favorite game on the Amiga. If I remember correctly when I went from my A1000 to an A2000 with A2620 card, other than playing smoother the pilots helmet would flash/blink which I assumed was from the 68020 vs. the 68000. Though that could have been playing it on my A4000 68040....it's been a while

This is the only game I've purchased since getting back in to Amiga, code wheel and all. Here's a video of it running in demo mode on my Amithlon system in E-UAE (so an Amiga emulator running in an Amiga emulator).

blinking may come from self-modifying code that some 68000 games used to avoid indirections and make execution faster (Combat Air Patrol, another flightsim, is a good example of that). Unfortunately with higher CPUs it fails miserably.

I didn't fix any SMC in whdload patch, but maybe I have missed something.

Movie my son want to watch this weekend. He constantly plays 'Danger Zone'. I remember watching it in movies theater back in day... that was good experience for 12-13 year old.

Couple of weeks ago we went to see Air Zoo and they had F-18 and F-14. It is nice to be able to see the from close.

Neat. You can see some overtones and styles both games have in common, like the "typing" text instructionals.

From the HOL entry, it says that the title music is only available for the 1MB version? I used to sit and listen to that music on my A1000 512KB... Was a cracked version though, if that makes any difference.

I bet the barrel roll after takeoff in demo mode was also carefully designed to match the opening credits in Top Gun. It made a big impression back then.
