Repairing a Quickshot II

Well my friend gave me one of these when he saw I had an Amiga and said he had no use for it as it was broken and no one attempted to repair it since no one needed it anymore, which came as a pleasant surprise as I was going to buy an exact one like this and knowing eBay this meant saving about 30$... not bad. The outside casing looks pretty good and clean and you can see it hasn't been used a lot, however on the inside it is a bit of a different story. The buttons click and work, all the wires seem soldered and still intact, but there seems to be problems with the axis movements. Note this stuff I notice is only mechanical, I haven't been able to actually test it due to Amiga being inoperative at the moment.

The stick comes with two plates that as you move the stick push down these small tin plates and make contact with the traces on the circuit board, fairly simple design. Only problem is on both of these plates there is a "leg" broken which means one of the directions will not work. I removed the more damaged plate and was going to use it with just one and it seems like it should work, however I still need to find a way to repair the broken leg. I'm not sure the name of the material but I think it's tin, fairly simple to bend, you can see on the pic, my plan was to cut off on of the legs from the other broken plate and solder it to this one...now I'm not sure if soldering is possible because of the material or if it would not work or melt?
Any advice is appreciated how to repair this leg. Thanks

Hi quantum112,

You can solder tin alright without it melting. It's not likely to be pure tin, as it's too expensive. So it's probably tin plated mild steel.

In any case, it'll be alright to solder it. It sounds like you have a good plan worked out.

Good luck!

BTW, thanks for the picture.

Thanks I'll give it a go tommorow. By the way, that bluetooth-serial combination works perfectly, I'll make a thread with pics to show the setup when I get my miggy working, but when I tried to configure the Bluetooth serial adapter over that Prolific USB-Serial adapter, it didn't work, just wouldn't detect it at all... I had to configure it wirelessly from my other USB bluetooth device. Like I said, these USB-Serial adapters are total junk, nothing seems to work with them. Last time I purchase something like that.

Thanks. That'll make a useful addition to that thread.

Just solder the relevant wire to the failing direction switch?

Well, I tried soldering it yesterday but it's a no-go. It won't solder. A ball just forms that won't adhere to the material no matter how heated or cleaned it is, in fact it already started to develop burn marks from the heating so it's more likely to burn through than to solder.

But the good news is someone local has just put up for sale the exact same joystick, used 2-3 times, just like new, so I'm going to try to snatch that one really cheap

That's a good bit of luck! (and it's about time you had some of that, mate. )

But why a Quickshot II? Perhaps set your sights on a more durable + reliable stick if you're going to buy a new one anyway.. :-)
