I didn't notice anything unusual, but I am not that watchful.

It seems to be completely gone now, after the last couple of weeks, all is good now, it had to be on the Steam Service side of things.

I have seen some posts about this and the only two things that seem to help are the following:

1) A complete OS reinstall, this is a drastic measure of course.

2) Backup any game/game data you need and then uninstall Steam completely and reboot.

Then download a fresh install of Steam and update to another folder.

So for instance if it was installed into the default of C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\

Then install into it's own directly like C:\Steam

Or even another HDD.

One of the biggest issues seems to be giving Steam the proper admin permissions so another option maybe to grant the Steam installer folder full access for EVERYONE/EVERYBODY

But this is problematic on Windows 7 and later as the OS doesn't want you to
do this with any sub-folder located under Program Files nor Program Files(x86).

The best option to try first is the uninstall and reinstall of Steam.

Perhaps using a tool like Uninstaller from I/O bit or something similar to get rid of any left over files and/or registry entries.

I wonder if some left over corrupted data is causing the Steam Issues.

3) I just found something else too, something about the downloads folder/folders for Steam, deleting the contents might help but do this with Steam not running and then maybe reboot the machine and try again ?

I've had a few games go through the download loop. Deleting the dir named for the games ID in 'steamapps/downloading' and restarting the download has worked for me.

That's why its best to install steam to something like 'c:\steam' as you suggested. I actually have a drive dedicated to steam so its available straight away if I do a clean install. Only problem is that with my library always growing, I have had to start installing steam games on my 'tools/work' and 'emulation' drives. Might have to look at building a NAS for steam storage.

He was using d:\Steam already, as one HD isn't big enough. Last time, not even installing from backup worked. Deleting files seems good to me I'll try this one next time.
Thanks
