Need to make up some custom cables for vide and sound. What's the best/cheap cable to use? Hack connectors off a shielded VGA cable or buy some metres of some cable from a supplier (UK or eBay)?

Have you tried old Scart cables (fully wired), some are quite heavy if its for short distances they should be ok, otherwise VGA should do.

If you want to include sound in the one cable, VGA won't be enough. An old SCART cable will do the job fine, but try to find a decent quality one with screened cores. They're usually pretty thick and heavy, but the picture quality will be much better.

If you're ok with very heavy audio and video SCART cable, I have some here that I could send you for the cost of shipping + a few beers...

I exclusively use junk cables. I have an Ikea bag full of old Scart, VGA and sound cables for building new custom cables.
Keep in mind that both VGA and Scart cables tend to be very thick, requiring some cutting to fit into a typical D-sub shell.
