Apidya SE

Another quick and dirty SE project.

This one doesn't have many changes (to be honest there's basically nothing in Apidya that could be improved on!), so the SE just offers some tweaks to the options menu - you can start from any level or view the end credits, select 7 lives to begin with and view a list of hints about secrets in the game. That's it.

I tried and failed to port the changes back to an ADF crack - if someone's willing to take care of that, I'd be much obliged (so it's just available as a patched WHDLoad images).

EDIT: Latest with autofire is in the zone

Edit: Forgot to include screenies

Edit 2: A couple of explanations..

- The "game hints" replace the Joypad/Joystick option, which had no tangible effect in gameplay (the memory address for that variable isn't accessed during the main game). While it's possible to use the second button on a megadrive pad, you've got to use the Second Btn option above that.

- Level select replaces the sound test, though not entirely. You can still listen to a song from each level by selecting it and pressing fire, though you can't listen to all of the sub songs, boss songs and secret level songs. Someone smarter than me could probably patch in a Level select into that options menu without removing the sound test

Great work earok!

Since the game does not require any kickstarts... I have made a HDF from it to share...

Well anyway, I've done an update which is in the zone. I felt guilty about hurting Amiga Bill's fingers on his livestream due to the game's lack of autofire, so I've patched in autofire.

A couple of quick notes how it works:

- Fire was always essentially unrestrained, so if you could tap the fire button 50 times a second you'd get 50 shots (barring the restriction on maximum shots on screen). I've hard coded the auto fire to fire a shot once every 8 frames, so the same as tapping fire about six times a second.
- The charge function hasn't been removed, it's still there. If you hold fire for about three seconds, and release, it'll do the charge shot. This does make the game a bit easier, so I've also included the original non-autofire version.

Hopefully it isn't TOO easy now, but I haven't extensively tested. Any feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks Earok, this is one of those games that requires an autofire option.

[slightly OF, but not too much ]

I'm dissecting the Apidya floppy images and found that the IPF #764 (the original KAIKO, publicly available) is slighty broken.
Track where options are saved (on cylinder 23) is not valid. You can recognize the problem because there is three load retry after intro loading, then a silent fail and default options are set.
In any case, by pressing save in the options screen a read attempt is made, so saving to floppy is impossible...

Can be patched and a working eADF (with the right MFM bits) made but is acceptable for the purists?

Audios re-release IPF is working properly.

Ouch :/ could it be a bad dump as opposed to a bad original?

I think purists wouldn't be that interested in this hack to begin with, so feel free to do what you want to make it as bug free as possible

Who know..
Track is empty and not in the expected format (but sync is here) so can be even a bad original.

But now is problem of the past: in The Zone! a proper bit perfect eADF that can save highscores and options to floppy (of course works also in WinUAE).

Great stuff

So where to from here? Are you interested in patching the ADF with the stuff on the special edition, or..?
