Retro Game Night: Short Quests for CD32 Games

A local bar / music venue is having a retro gaming night in a couple of weeks and I volunteered my CD32 for action. This is pretty far out considering that I am in the United States and most of the people are bringing standard Sega / Nintendo fare.

The organizer is requesting that we make some sort of "quests" for like, a video game scavenger hunt so players can check them off at the end of the night. I suddenly realized that I haven't played through most of my CD32 games, and would have no idea what an appropriate "quest" would be for a CD32 game. It could be something like beating a level in a game, or maybe one of the Pinball illusions table goals or whatever. I think the games that will be most fun are All Terrain Racing and Chaos Engine, maybe some sensi soccer, since they are multiplayer friendly. Outside that I have close to the entire CD32 library on hand to choose from but would like to keep it to party friendly, short attention span gaming.

Anyone else have any "quest" ideas for our players?

I would recommend other simple team games, like Lotus Trilogy, Brutal football and of course IK+.

Some nice multiplayer games for CD32 to try out: All Terrain Racing (ATR), Banshee, Bump 'n' Burn, The Chaos Engine, Lamborghini American Challenge (LAC), Sensible Soccer of course, Speedball 2, Ultimate Body Blows.

So I have the following for the virtual scavenger hunt.

  • Find a shortcut in ATR
  • Go Bungee jumping in Pinball illusions (Extreme Sports Board)
  • Shoot the Tower in Pinball Fantasies (Stones and Bones Board)
  • Reach the second Level in co-op mode in Chaos Engine
Not too complicated but since there will be a lot of people rotating on a lot of different systems, this might work out. If you can think of anything that would be more fun, or any actual easter eggs, let me know.

These quests sound like achievements/trophys on Xbox360/PS3
Nice idea for a possible competition with friends!

So last night went down and it was a lot of fun. The room was very Nintendo heavy with lots of Golden Eye, Mario Kart and Smash Brothers in the room. Nobody in the room had ever seen a CD32 and only a handful had ever heard of it. Here is the takeaways from everyone that came by to play.

  • People were amazed at how bad Super Street Fighter II was. But they played anyway. All through the night people kept asking to see and play it.
  • Rise of the Robots made everyone laugh but got a lot of comments about the graphics.
  • The Pinball games were not terribly well received.
  • All Terrain Racing was played a lot.
  • France and Scotland played Sensi to a nill nill draw. I said "How realistic right guys?"
On Facebook today I got a lot of nice comments from people that had never seen one before. For me it was a real treat to share the CD32 and it's story with a new crowd from a new generation.

Well remember, this is in the United States so that is enough for most people to have never seen one. Most of the folks in attendance were in their early 20's.
