The Amiga's best gaming idle animations video montage thingy

I've compiled a collection of all the ones I could think of without trying every single game in the known universe.

[ Show youtube player ]

If there are loads I've missed maybe I could follow it up with an EAB member's choice video with your names shown alongside the clips?

...or maybe it has never been done before because it's a stupid idea. Hmm.

edit: here's the follow-up video...

Nice. I think Bart Vs. The Space Mutants has Bart look briefly at the screen when idle, but I can't think of many others off the top of my head.

The current worm in Worms would look at you / the camera and say "Hello!" or "Come on then!" if left idle.

Barbarian (head-chopping version): When you don't move them for a while, the warriors raise their shoulders, look at you and move their mouths.

Another World: with a broad definition of "idle", the UFO death could be considered an idle animation: [ Show youtube player ]

Nice I remember in Global Gladiators there is extra idle for standing on invisible platform. Aladdin got nice extended animation with apple and Oscar is full of idle animations.

Great suggestions (and plug!) everyone, thanks very much. I'll get to work on the sequel.

I reckon that counts, lilalurl. The quirky ones are the best.

What surprised me was how many really visually impressive games don't have an idle animation. Wolfchild, Lionheart, Switchblade II, and Ruff 'n' Tumble for example. I thought attention to detail would go hand in hand with idle animation, especially with the cartoony games, but I suppose it's a design choice and not everyone agrees that they add charisma.

Dan, I can't believe I used some of the Premiere intro and forgot to include the hero's idle animation, sorry. His impatient arm-folding is very brief but unusual and a nice change from the breaking the fourth wall trick. I'll make sure I include it next time.

I wanted to finish with something involving sleep so it was a toss up between Premiere and Sleepwalker. Premiere won because the graphics and animation are exquisite. So cinematic throughout.

...not that Sleepwalker is a slouch in the graphics dept. either.

Right, I've recorded clips of all those now. Even managed to find the invisible platforms in Mick and Mack and got to the cage section of Another World to capture the UFO animation. There doesn't seem to be any HD quality footage of that on YouTube for the original Amiga version so it'll be great to include that.

I can't believe I cut short Aladdin's apple juggling scene. Muppet! I'll fix that this time.

That just leaves Supaplex - wow, that's a pain to emulate isn't it? I finally got it to load (it takes an eternity making you think it has crashed) using a stock A500 config, but then it was horribly glitchy. Is there some special trick I'm not aware of to get it to play nicely?

Yes it does take a bit to load (nothing "800% floppy drive emulation" or "warp mode" can't fix) but the game works fine here without any glitches that I could see. Use the following:

... A500
... ECS Agnus (Cycle-exact)
... KS 1.3
... 512KB Chip & 512KB Slow
... Supaplex (1991)(Dream Factory)[cr CSL][t +3 AFL].adf

Also some demos of unreleased platform games got idle animations - Agricola - nice smoking looped animation, Pati - simple quick head rotation and next full sprite rotation into opposite direction, Gamer - quick single "naughty" animation.

Just wached it again. You have cut Aladdin animation too early. I wonder did mature Simba in The Lion King also got idle animation. In Brian The Lion there is extra idle animation for snow levels near the end of game.
