oo oo!
I got one! If this is considered a shoot em up, then it is my all time favourite (beating Swiv by alot) The game I speak of, is Gyruss. I think this game is in the arcade, but I've only ever played it on the C64, and I must say that no matter how much I play it, it rocks! The graphics aren't great (the game was made in 1984 ), but the sound is really cool. It also plays fantastic and lasts really long (I have yet to complete it, although I have gotten close) I seriously think this is my all time favourite Sorry. No screenshot. I'm feeling a bit lazy right now |

Well, on the Amiga I would have to say I got the most mileage out of SWIV and Xenon 2, cliché as that may sound.
And I have always been a sucker for Galaga. But I also loved Gyruss, too. And while it's not a shooter, Tron rocked. I played Tron more than any other arcade machine ever. |

Gyruss and Galaga are terrific! I am sad that Galaga '90 was not ported to the Amiga And that there is no Gyruss version for the meega either!!
Lots of great arcade conversions... sadly missed... |

I don't recall a Galaga '90! I know there's a Galaga '88, which with Gyruss are both available for MAME.

Ah, that's cleared that one up!
A very groovy game is Galaga '88 (or '90 if you prefer!) I prefer the original though. I never understood why the Amiga didnt get more arcade conversions. Also I am somewhat disappointed by a lot of them - many of which were ST portovers. One only has to look at Rainbow Islands to see what can be done. Don't really remember any quality Amiga arcade conversion shmups except for Silkworm. That was a good conversion too! |

It is, though Pulstar pishes all over it
Pulstar is the end-all shmup for the NeoGeo. And it's got that R-Type spirit. Supposedly was made by ex-Irem guys who formed part of the R-Type team. It shows Pictures pending... |

My favourite ever was Star Force. A vertical scroller that is still really hard. I have never finished it without cheating, and I still remember my highscore of about 980 000
It works in MAME - http://www.mame.mrnice.net/starforc.zip tehkan 1984 |

Shoot em baby!
Can't choose one (but I will) since I've played so many after owning an Amiga, Snes, Megadrive, Lynx, ST, Speccy and Vic-20.
Highlights of shoot em ups I've played and thought were great games: Vic-20 - loved Gorf and Omega Race Speccy - lightforce and others I can't remember ST - Plutos! and Asteroids which came free with the system disks! Also OIDS, I loved this game, but I'm not sure if it counts Lynx - that one with the eyeballs but can't remember it's name, er, oh yeah - Gates of Zendocon! Megadrive - Gynoug, Areoblasters SNES - Super Aleste Amiga - loved 2-player blasts - silkworm, battlesquadron and banshee. The best of all time may not be here and I will have missed a few but these are the ones I remember playing the most off the top of my head. Out of the above, Super Aleste goes forward as my fave blaster. Rck and others, if you liked Axelay and the R-type series on the snes (and I love them games two) you're going to love Super Aleste assuming you haven't already played it! Super Aleste really shines in the gameplay department. It is the best I have ever experienced in a shooter and I've played a lot of games. Tons of powerups and weapons, not to mention 6 different power levels for each of the 8 weapons AND several modes of fire on each individual one! Using the correct mode of fire and selecting the best weapons for different circumstances is quite a skill and means your constantly thinking as your blasting. Also the control is TIGHT! I mean this is some of the most responsive control I have ever played. And believe me you are gonna need it to avoid the massive enemy fire. Take my word for it you will not be dissapointed with this game and you guys must try it out some time on an EMU. Goes to find screen shot............................. But this one lack of: - weapons - good music - gameplay (isometric is not the best way for shoot) And the game IS really too difficult. |
