Revenge Bootblock virus on my disk!
Hi guys,
I just bought an original of the game Monty Python's Flying Circus on Ebay. I always do a quick check of the disks before anything else, and unfortunately VirusZ reports that it has Revenge Bootblock virus on it. I assume I need a copy of the original game bootblock to rewrite on to the floppy? What are my options? Are there any Amiga resources for this kind of thing? Thanks for any help. :-) Last edited by Angus; 10 February 2020 at 21:42. |

First, better try to copy the floppies first using xcopy or disk imaging
Fix the copy and if it works/boots, you can perform the same fix operation on the original. no need trying to preserve a virus on an original floppy |

Hi Jean-Francois! Thanks for the reply. I don't know any clever ways of copying disks beyond xcopy, and that's unlikely to defeat protected software isn't it? I just thought as it's a boot virus, if I could get a copy of the original boot, and "copy and paste" it on to my original disk, I should be good..... no? |

Could this not be a false positive due to most games using different boot loaders than workbench?

Trivial fix Angus, pretty sure Monty Python was Copylock, so as long as you only copy the bootblock from the IPF, your original should be good to go again.
EDIT: Actually its just a document check, so no Copylock track to screw up by the looks of things. Presumably you still have a real Amiga? |

So it was document check and Copylock!
In the zone is the file "montyboot", copy that to your hard drive and execute it, when prompted, put your original Monty Python into DF0: and follow onscreen instructions. Assuming no other damage to disk, bootblock should now be fixed and gamedisk should now operate correctly |

Wow, many thanks Sire! :-)
The file installed on to the floppy, and I checked the bootblock again and it was Rob Northern Copylock etc, but the floppy doesn't want to boot. On Workbench it shows as NDOS, and attempting to boot it I get a "The floppy is Non DOS" (or words to that effect) requester. It maybe there was something wrong already with the floppy, as the first thing I did was check it for a virus. This is the first time I've tried to boot it. Having said that, it seems to be fully functional - no horrible drive noises and happy to read the bootblock. Really appreciate the kind help, I'm guessing I'm stuffed? |

Montyboot2 did it! :-) Very many thanks Phill. I degraded my 1200 to enhanced graphics/caches off and it ran great with an 060 card and 32 megs of fast ram. Although the identify the cheese protection proved challenging, the game has quite an authentic Python vibe to it. Anyway, brilliant stuff. I really appreciate it. P.S. The Larch. ........The Larch. |
