3.1.4 speed difference MapROM vs ROM?
Hi everyone!
I have read some topics about the 3.1.4 upgrade, and I just bought it for my A1200 with Blizzard 1230IV. Does anyone have some experience with the performance of the system compared to 3.1? Today I run a 3.1 system with a patched scsi.device loaded with LoadModule in SS closely followed by latest Setpatch and NSDPatch for 4GB+ compatibility. On my system there is a noticeable speeddifference of the system before LoadModule is patching scsi.device. So my question is: If I'm using MapROM (Blizkick for example) to load the supplied kickstartfile, would the system theoretically run slower than a system with new ROM-chips with 3.1.4? I think I've read somewhere that LoadModule loads everything into Chipram that is dead slow? I think I'm a bit confused because I read this part from the 3.1.4 FAQ-file that was included: Code:
* OS 3.1.4 is terribly slow! You are using a disk-based installation, right? Well, LoadModule needs to load the updated ROM modules into some reset-resident memory. In a worst-case scenario, this is Chip RAM, and yes, access to Chip RAM is slow. However, you can do the following: 1. Buy a physical ROM and install it, thus eliminating the need for replacing ROM modules by RAM modules Or, in case your system is equipped with a MMU: 2. Install the MMUlib archive from Aminet and add the following command below SetPatch in the S:Startup-sequence: MuProtectModules ON REMAP This will remap the ROM modules from their current location to the fastest available RAM and give you some extra speed. Keep in mind, that using this option will occupy ram which you won't be able to free. |

With mapROM you have kickstart in fast RAM, so whether it is faster or slower depends on how fast RAM access is. In general, Fast RAM is a lot faster than ROMs.

Thanks for the fast reply, Kolla!
That's also what I recall from the good old days. I rember we used blizkick to get the same kickstart we got in ROM into fastram because there was a small speed difference... But what about loading intuition.library v45 with Loadmodule afterwards? Will it be placed in chipram then? |

Blizzards' maprom function prevents you from buying physical roms.
Moreover, the Kickstart in a protected area reserved by the board speeds up some functions of the Workbench. To avoid double reboot for loading of intuition.library v45 by LoadModule you can use Remus to recreate a new 3.1.4 ROM with the library already inside. |

Awesome!
I didn't know about Remus! I definitely need to give it a try. I was afraid that I needed a double reboot go get all this to function properly. Thanks again, I'll give it a try now |

To avoid double reboot, BlizKick can already load modules extracted from 3.5 or 3.9 ROM Update files. So reasonably it should also be able to load 3.1.4 modules like V45 intuition.library.
