Sqrxz V1.3 released

To shorten the time until the Sqrxz 3 release, Retroguru presents today an update of Sqrxz 1:

This is not just a minor update, but the program was recoded from scratch, based on Sqrxz 3 code (which inherited code from Solid Gold). Enjoy jump&run frustration at smooth 50 fps!

Minimum system requirements: Amiga, 1 MB, Kickstart 1.2.
The second button on game pads is supported for jumping, but for this kind of game I can only recommend a Competition Pro-like joystick. Have fun on the International Amiga Day!

Thanks phx!

Will there also be a release that runs from HD for bigbox machines?

The updated version loads music using its own trackloader from disk, so running the executable from a different medium is not so easy.

Maybe somebody will create a WHDLoad-version for that purpose.

Sqrxz3 is finished since January. But we wanted to make a physical (boxed) release for it. This took a lot of time (print on disks, design and print the box, design the booklet, etc.). The design phase is almost completed and we hope to release it in July (no promises, though).

Sqrxz 4 is half done. Only the new features, which make the difference to Sqrxz 3, are still missing in the code.

Good work guys! I have to say that the Sqrxz games are amongst the finest and most complete examples the scene has to offer! Phx, I reckon you're responsible for the amiga conversion, right?

Took a quick look at the updated version. Yeah, it's runs much more smooth now than the previous version for sure. I remember the title screen was running lagy when I did the longplay.

Well done

Can't wait for Sqrxz 3

This is such a great game! I've been playing it solidly for days. I need to hurry up and beat it so I can play through 2.

Are there any plans to revamp 2 with 3s engine?

I can make no promises for part 2. The priority is to finish part 4, which is new. And then, who knows, maybe my brother wants to make a successor to Solid Gold some day?

Personally I think that graphics, music and game play are best in part 3. It's a bit harder than part 1, but always fair.

Played this on my a600 last night and plays so much smoother than before. Still as hard as ever though

Look forward to a whdload version as my poor old Amiga Technologies A1200 can't handle the trackloader.

Good to hear Sqrxz 3 is coming to classic amiga. Sqrxz and Solid Gold are one of the finest amiga games of the past years. I especially love Sqrxz' music. But Sqrxz is so fn hard. I still need to get past level 3 in Sqrxz 1 lol. It feels like I still need to master the controls. I actually think I would play better with keyboard cursor keys so I'm secretly hoping you'll add those one day. Well thanks for the game(s)!

Is this a problem specific to Sqrxz (and Solid Gold), or do you experience the same problem with many other trackloader games?

Keep trying so you can listen to more good music.

Indeed it plays very good with keys. You can see that on the SDL-version of the game, or when running udder UAE.
It can be done, but I think a classic Amiga game should be played with a joystick.

I guess any that use the DSKRDY line are affected by it. I had a few older games cease to work on the 1200 when I originally bought it back in the day, but that didn't matter so much as they could just run on A500.

Does the loader used in Sqrxz and Solid Gold use DSKRDY?

Tried it with keys in UAE and already got to level 6! Should have thought of that earlier hah. I still rather play it on a real amiga ofcourse but I know keys are not common for Amiga games. I wonder why though since the amiga called itself a pc and other pc's of that time had lots of games with keyboard controls. Maybe they wanted to stimulate joystick sales.
