LOL they're not server backups. Though that would be fairly entertaining to make a noobie backup a NAS to floppy lols.

It's all firmware and system dumps for bug reporting, i.e. <1050Kb. 1024Kb for the EPRom and the rest is a dump of registers, etc.

I tried one of those things, the cats just look at you as if your stupid, and the only real thing that happens are the squirrels fall out of the trees....

Thanks to Microsoft screwing up Vista and destroying what little faith people had left in them, zillions of people are still clinging to XP until it is wrought from their cold, dead hands.

And therein lies a use of floppy disks: aside from going to a machine with a CD burner and arsing around with nLite (a terribly inconvenient and time consuming process), it's the only way to get Windows XP Setup to see the hard drive on some machines.

loads of people using old studio gear (akai, emu and roland etc..) samplers still use them. So yeah there's still demand for them.

I used floppy disks regularly till early this year on my Korg PA 50, but then I replaced the drive with Gotek
[ Show youtube player ]
Also, I've tryied to load some games on the Amiga 1000, but all the 4 floppies that I mounted were reading with huge difficily, only managed to load kickstart properly, till I replaced the Amiga 1000 floppy with Gotek as well.
I plan to buy several more Goteks and replace them in the other Amigas and I can finally kiss good bye to the 4000 floppy discs I have in the basement. I am pretty sure I won't miss them.

I still use floppies, with the Amigas, and with two Ensoniq synthesizers I have. I don't really feel the need yet for a floppy emulator, 2SDD disks can be pretty reliable !

8" disks are still used by the US millitary for nuclear weapon systems:

The report said that the Department of Defence systems that co-ordinated intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear bombers and tanker support aircraft "runs on an IBM Series-1 Computer - a 1970s computing system - and uses eight-inch floppy disks".
"This system remains in use because, in short, it still works," Pentagon spokeswoman Lt Col Valerie Henderson told the AFP news agency.

I use floppies often, all of the current floppy emulators are quite annoying in my use case.. The closest to usability is a HxC Gotek with an LCD screen. I always secretly hope that the art projects are made out of HD floppies. Working DDs are too precious to waste. :-)

seeing as how I find HD disks about ten times as often as I find DD disks in thrift stores etc, they probably are. At least, I hope so too!
