Rom upgrade for CDTV

Anyone upgraded a CDTV to a higher kickstart than 1.3 and still been able to use the CDRom?

Is it possible, if so whats required and any hope of getting these items today?

Upgrade the extended ROM.

Required, two EPROM chips, 27 series but I can't remember what size.

Today? Do you have an EPROM programmer and a good assortment of EPROMs at your disposal?

27C1000 (100% pin compatible, obsolete 15+ years..)
27C1001 (2 pins must be swapped, still available)

Can also use 27C2001 or 27C4001 but wastes space.

"Extended" ROM version information:

1.0 is not compatible with KS 2.0+.
2.07 = updated CDTV ROM with KS 2.0+ compatibility.
2.30 = A570 extended ROM (appears to be compatible with CDTV but causes red screen without floppy drive)

No I don't and I wouldn't even know where to start or even how to use one.

Anyone EAB's out there available to assist?

Legally I could sell you some 27c1000 chips... if they just happen to come programmed you could always erase them later

The only problem is I am not 100% reliable when it comes to posting "assist" stuff (as Jimbob005 will testify to. I'll post it this week honest!)

Edit: Balls I see that you're in Oz too...

I'm a patient man! Should only cost a a few pounds to airmail to me. Now how much would those blank 27c1000 chips cost me? You also wouldn't have some blank chips to upgrade a Picasso IV Zorro2PCI-bridge?

I recently needed two 27c1000 chips for a CDTV and had to buy 100 pcs.

I would have to double check what I paid for them but I think I could do you them for £1.50 each.

For education purposes, pure speculation of course, should someone would require v2.07 rather than v2.30 (to avoid red screen without floppy drive) they would have to provide whatever scallywag was programming the EPROMS the appropriate binary files. Of course such an act would be a contravention of international laws and I cannot condone such behaviour

The only man that can do PIV MACH CPLD chips is Tobias Seiler (aka Mastatabs), have a chat to him over on Amiga.org or on the picasso96 Yahoo group.

Too expensive and boring. Attached is the "real" way to do it

2x27C4001, switchable to 1.0,2.07,2.30 or "none". Also includes 27C160 KS EPROM, 1.2/1.3/2.04/3.1 switcher. (and more, SCSI expansion, regular joystick ports, 8MB Fast RAM and CF->IDE->SCSI adapter coming soon..)

Nice CDTV you have there Toni

Reminds me of mine, although I use a real SCSI HDD and have a clockport and accelerator under the hood And I just use 2.3.0 Custom ROM of course, (always have fdd attached anyway)

Holy sh... this looks crazy!
By the way I have my CDTV upgraded with 2x 27C1001 loaded with the 2.30 ROM-code, KS2.04 and 3.1 switchable, and WB3.1 installed on a built-in SCSI HDD. A guy in Germany still builds those SCSI kits in his spare time. If anybody's interested, then I can dig-up his email address.

@Toni: Could you elaborate a bit about why someone might want to switch the ROM off (your "none" option)?

I have 1x original CDTV with 1.0 ROMs and one upgraded as mentioned above, but I cannot switch the ROM code on the upgraded one back to 1.0 or to "none".

EDIT: your CF->IDE->SCSI adapter sounds very interesting. Could you explain a bit what it is and how it integrates with the CDTV?

How is it that this describes exactly my one If I hadn't told you before, you rule Toni

I had that posted once, his website is http://www.cnctechniker.de/. But as he's extremely busy currently and the populated boards are sold, please do not bother him until mid-September. He has enough SCSI kits, 5 Kickswitches and about 10 mouse/joystick adapters (that add regular 9 pin connectors), which he just have to populate.

Use a CDTV SCSI controller, connect the 50 pin cable from it to a SCSI->IDE bridge (usually Acard AEC-7720U; Yamaha V769970 is more compact but does not work with CF), connect an IDE->CF adapter either directly to the SCSI->IDE bridge or use an IDE cable (needs one male/one female connector). Everything except the SCSI controller of course has to be mounted under the mainboard.

Thats looks way to complicated! A simple rom upgrade will do I think!

Real old SCSI HDDs are too noisy and too big (physically)
Accelerator would be nice but I don't really need it, my CDTV will be cool looking whdload gaming + compatibility testing Amiga.

27C4001 has space for 4 extended ROM "banks", last bank is empty ("none" option) because there is only 3 different CDTV extended ROMs (CDTV CR ROM is MIA), also KS 1.2 won't work with extended ROMs and I wanted to use my CDTV for A500 compatibility testing and sometimes KS 1.2 might be needed

I've got some CF->SCSI adapters which are the same form factor as 2.5" drives and so work well with the CDTV, I'll post some pics.

Yes, this is the guy. I bought a nice SCSI-TV from him a couple of months ago. Works like a charm.

Now I see, this is to get rid of an SCSI harddisk. Thanks, Thor.

Thanks, Toni for the explanation. Too bad the CDTV developer ROMs are MIA or locked somewhere in a safe.

Ok, so if I have the A570 extended ROMs will I still be able to use a Kickstart 1.3 ROM?

I'm asking as I'd like to be able to switch between 1.3 & 3.1.

Also, sorry to ask everyone, but I had a diagram once that showed how to make the switchable ROMs by soldering one on top of the other, but you had to bend out a few legs, add resistors, etc.

I've been searching all night and cannot locate it in any of my archives, nor can I find it on Aminet...there is some Russian one that says to solder ALL legs together...sounds bad!

If someone has this pic, can they PLEASE post it?

PZ.

Hello Fingerz.

Not exactly all pins. In truth, all but one.

This is the same thing I had to do in my Sinclair ZX80 ages. Yep, you can call me old.

The pins bended are just the ones who are intended to allow "read" the EPROM. On 27C1001 is the pin 22 (chip enable).

Hot to do: solder together every pin of the two chips (after code burn), but pins 22. Those pins must be bended and add a wire to each one.

From the pin 22 (on the socket), route a wire to H-H switch (center pin). The 22th pins are routed to each tip of the switch.

Simple enough to need a schematic, don't you think?
