HD floppy drive only seen as 880K
I just installed a new FB-357A floppy drive which says it should work as a high density floppy drive in my 4000T. The guy I bought it from said it worked as an HD drive in his 4000
First it will only work as DF0 when its connected on the twisted end of the cable,. I can boot off of it, read off of it. But when you stick a high density floppy ( I took one that was formated by a PC since thats all I have) in the drive and click on format it says its 880k Anyone know whats wrong? Thanks! |

The aspect I wasn't aware of is that the drive is configured as a 880K drive during boot, and shows up as 880K drive in the format tool (right after boot). But only after a HD floppy has been inserted it switches to 1760K mode (which can be observed live in the format tool). After that it remains in 1760K mode. I had thought it to be the other way round.
Secondly, the drive is not always performing the mode switch, sometimes it fails to do so, and this probably fooled me sometimes. |

Did like you said and booted, stuck in the floppy and then click format, popped the disc out andf put it back in and still says 880K never changed to 1.7mb
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! |

The sensing switch for high density may have failed, small switch on the opposite side to the write protect switch.

Cleaning the switch is one thing, have you put a multimeter across it to see if it changes state with press / release?
You could also look at speed checking via X-Copy to see what it's doing. Last edited by Loedown; 07 March 2013 at 12:08. Reason: Lack of reading and comprehension skills |
