Question Chaos Engine CD32 Broken? (Solved: Don't Use Fast RAM!)

Does anyone know if this works in FS-UAE? For some reason it refuses to load for me. I get the CD32 logo, that goes away... and then nothing. The screen stays black.

I thought maybe my rip was bad so I downloaded one and tried that, same behaviour, CD32 logo then just blackness.

Has anyone tried this and can confirm that it does indeed work in FS-UAE? (the WHDLoad version works fine, this is specifically the CD32 disc version I'm referring to).

Works for me. I use version 2.6.2 and this disk, Chaos Engine, The (1994)(Renegade)[!][CDD3445].zip

CD loaded in FS-UAE:
Chaos Engine, The (1994)(Renegade)[!][CDD3445].cue (game://08cb7ccb-e98a-5dc2-a798-66091bd22559)

Interesting. That's the second copy I tried after mine didn't work. Must be something weird this side. Thanks Arnie.

Make sure you have the lates .cue files from recent TOSEC DAT pack sets. Some rips in the net comes with older .cue files. The attached one should work.
Attached Files
File Type: rar Chaos Engine, The (1994)(Renegade)[!][CDD3445].rar (365 Bytes, 189 views)

There's nothing special in that CUE file, so it shouldn't be that. My rip is a BIN/CUE pair anyway.

I don't know what's wrong on your site, but

1. Chaos Engine, The (1994)(Renegade)[!][CDD3445] is an original ISO+WAV rip. If you get a release with the same name as Bin/Cue it's a re-rip of it. Maybe a broken re-rip then.

2. FS-UAE can only scan CD32 games properly with the correct .cue files (with the correct CRC), but i assume you've set a CD32 config manually and don't use the online database.

The BIN/CUE was of my own disc. I downloaded the "Chaos Engine, The (1994)(Renegade)[!][CDD3445]" one to try that (which consisted of ISO+WAVs) and that did the same thing - just showed the Amiga logo and then just black.

I'm not using FS-UAE's frontend/scanner thing so that shouldn't matter about CRCs.

I must have something weird set somewhere that's breaking it, so I'll look into fiddling here some more.

Just tried and it works fine here. FS-UAE 2.7.14 Developer. Maybe you use an older FS-UAE. At some point the WinUAE core had some problems with some CD32 games. Worth a try to update your emulator.

Just to add; it really is a lot easier using the online database as Retro mentioned.

I'm running GIT as of last night, so it's not that.

That's not really an option due to the multi-system, multi-emulator frontend that I'm using to run everything. Out of literally everything I have, only 2 games are giving me grief.

That's strange. Standard CD32 settings works without any issue here.

That's fine. I hope you get it sorted.

I'm using the same config as Retro. The game plays fine but the sound is a bit choppy for me (probably my laptop)

It was one of my default config options. I commented out everything in the config file and now it works. I'll re-enable them one by one and edit this comment when I figure out which it was.

It was Fast RAM. Apparently the game doesn't start if you have any fast RAM set. Bit weird.

I'll have to change my CD32 script to force Fast RAM off, as my default config specifies 8MB of Fast RAM. Setting "--fast_memory=0" on the command line allows the game to work fine regardless of other settings.

Who would have thought?

Hardly surprising. A default CD32 console doesn't have fastram. It's to be expected that some games don't like it.

Sure, but I would have thought they'd just ignore it. I wonder what the game is trying to do that causes it to see the Fast RAM and break?

Actually is loads with fastram enabled. But you get a black screen all the time. Wait long enough and you hear the intro audio, buttons works too. You can play it blindly.

Haha, I don't think I waited that long. Makes sense for me to force Fast RAM off for the CD32 setup going forward anyway though as it may have caused issues for other games as well that I hadn't noticed yet.
