One argument is that they are selling you the entire experience. If you play their games using sub-standard equipment you might have a bad experience which would reflect on their image.
Apple could likely also create a version of iOS which could be installed on an Android phone to increase their customer base, but they want to sell their software bundled only with hardware that they can control 100% since that will make it smoother and more stable. The hardware in an iPhone and any Android phone is not that different when it comes down to it. |

But they could also market the roms as playable on their brand new mini console that comes with warranty and plugs into an hd tv over HDMI.
Not everyone has the ability to use emulators or wants that hassle of getting an old console working on a modern tv. Plus the maintenance headache some old consoles can be. There is a market to release the roms. They also could use the sales data to see what old ips are most popular to develop new titles for possibly further pushing sales of new consoles. |

A three legged cat has more chance of burying a turd on a frozen pond than Nintendo has stopping people using their rom's.
I don't know the Japanese equivalent of the Streisand effect but lol anyway.... |

I have no qualms about pirating old console games, and even think buying them in Virtual Console or similar legal shops is a bit unethical.
When you listen to a song on a legal streaming service or buy the download, a certain cut of the money goes to the original artist, the musicians and the composer, thanks to the established copyright systems in the music industry. When you buy a Virtual Console game, Nintendo takes a cut, and the licensor takes a cut. The company that originally made the game may be dissolved since decades, their assets absorbed by other companies who now receive that payment. If the company that made the game still exists, it may not receive any money because it was a subcontractor. And no matter what, no-one actually involved in the creation of the game receives a single yen, because they never had any rights to their own creation to begin with. I have better things to do with my money than give them to companies which never produced the product I'm buying to begin with, and I try not to confuse "legal" with "ethical". We need to get rid of the notion that Megaman was made by Capcom. It was made by people. |

I went to Emuparadise to see for myself. No roms are available at all. Even the Atari 2600 roms are not there.

After they saw that NES mini OUTSOLD PS4/Xbox they went completely furious and mad about their IP, they were nasty before but now they completely freaked out and jumped the fence. Seems these are the last days for all major rom sites.

They'll probably go after others like this forum for trading/downloading roms.
Oh yeah, and what about emulators? |

Like a few lawsuits from Nintendo are going to stop anyone. If you want roms you'll find them if you look hard enough. They've been trying to close the Pirate Bay down for over a decade and yet it's still there distributing anything and everything to anyone with a connection.

OK, pointless gossip time, allow me : I am glad lots of people praise the mini consoles, but HDMI out and crappy proprietary controller ports ? Nah, give us VGA out, or bust! The funny thing about the apparent ROM supply shortage as of late is that I was almost done downloading heaps of them SNES / MD / PS roms, ISOs and whatnot from EmuParadise and similar repositories just a few weeks ago, for my (re)collection. The IsoZone pulling the plugs is a bit sad, joke apart. The way I figure it out, Nintendo et al coordinated response leans towards the following statement "Fans, I made you a delightfully nostalgic cookie... but I eated it ". Well, you could use AROS ROM which is a free open-source kickstart, however it probably won't provide the compatibility most people would expect so for most people WinUAE is pretty useless without the original kickstarts.
