I got my first Amiga already with a 512 kb RAM expansion and second floppy drive... and I can't remember the phone number of the guy I bought it from I very quickly found out why a second drive is very useful and bought a third one

Multi-disk games was the reason I got one for my A500 back in the day.

Just got mine recently when I installed HxC inside my a600 in place of internal disk drive. I like to use floppies sometimes, that loading noises are part of whole experience.

Yes, I could go along with that.

One game frustrated me, can't remember what it was now, but you inserted disk 1, then needed 2, then 1, then 3, then 4, back to 1 again (approx) before you could even start playing the damn game. Once you had finished a certain point, you had to repeat the process again, drove me crazy

Of course this could have been a cracked copy but not entirely sure now.

Because of the multi disk games. Also bought a dot matrix printer to print out the game manuals, they came on a disk from the cracking groups, sold that after a few months though.

That reminds me of what I used to do with my "backed up" games

I used to "Print Screen" the title page of the game using the Action replay, then I used to print it onto a disk label using the old colour dot matrix.

Mainly due to the fact my hand writing's sh1t

Why the extra floppy....

Hmmm..

Can't remember specifically what made me get the drive...
Probably a "SALE" sign on the drive.. ;-)

(Now that I think about it.. I'm betting it was for disk copying reasons.....)

Colour, did they make them in those days?

I used to write in a fine tipped quality pen on the end of the disk label. I suppose I have a form of OCD things have to be neat and tidy.

I managed to find a High density Power Computing XL drive. 1.76 MB, so I bought it. Handy for OS installs (didn't have WinUAE at the time)

Re: what made you buy an external drive?

I bought a A1010 because of mainly productivity programs. Was much nicer to have the program in df0 and files on df1. But as anyone else at that time also for games and making the backup of the backup disks. ;-)

The first monkey island as well, and most other adventure games come to think of it.

Mainly though I think it was xcopy that made me get one..

How did you get on with Monkey Island!? lol ...

Unfortunately, I didn't get external floppy drive until a few years ago. Back when I was young, we didn't have all the money in the world and I was grateful with just having an Amiga. To be fair, the disk changing frenzy was all part of the fun... I can't help but think external drives took that away! lol

I got mine for the SSI D&D games, Might and Magic games etc.. The good thing about external drives was when you planned in advance which disk was needed next. Might and Magic III for example...knowing disk 3 was the character disk, you could insert the disk early which allowed for a more free flowing game. It was the way I use to do things anyway.

Games in general. Well, nothing MADE me buy one per se.

Having played stuff like Monkey Island before, I bought one along with the machine to begin with.

The reason I got External drives was for Multi disk games, then finding Xcopy worked better with the extra drive.
