Most powerfull acellerator in a standard desktop A1200?
Ok, everyone seems to have differing opinnions but the question is, what is the most powerfull acellerator I can fit in my standard desktop A1200?
(It has to physically fit and not overheat) |

I can't comment on PPC A1200 setups, but I've been perfectly happy with my Blizzard 1260 @ 50Mhz.
There were also other Apollo accelerators that were clocked at 66 and 75 Mhz - but these needed a fan maybe?? |

The fastest A1200 Blizzard card without a PPC is the 1260@60MHz. The fastest Apollo with a full 68060 is the 1260@66MHz, but this uses a 50MHz chip overclocked to 66MHz. The fastest Apollo is the 1260@75MHz, but this does not have an FPU.
None of these boards need a fan. All of them work OK in the trapdoor slot (or, in the case of the Apollo cards, as well as can be expected). You might find that you need to leave the trapdoor cover off to get enough cool air into the computer. Beware of the tower-only version of the Blizzard 1260 - this will not fit into a desktop case because of the way the SIMM socket is orientated. Works fine in a tower, though. 68040 accelerators do need fans as the 040 runs much hotter. |

Hmm so say I installed a Blizzard 1260 and cut a hole in one of my spare trapdoors adding a big vent, that should run ok?

I run my Blizzard IV with the trap door off as I start getting loads of crashes otherwise. The only thing is I have to remember that the trap doors off it I ever need to move the amiga 1200. I'm sure I've heard of a 250mhz ppc accelerator for the A1200 that can have up to 256mb of ram, maybe that just for the tower though.

See even my 1230 MkIV runs hot after a while with the trapdoor shut, as I said I may make some sort of vent for it.

Yes, the 68030/50 in the blizzard iv does get quite hot indeed. Especially on hot days in australia, and with a SCSI kit on top of it. Runnable for me inside the case, but i would not want to stress the old hardware for too long.
Is the 68060/50 cooler or hotter than the 68030/50? I suppose Blizzard 1260/2060 owners might know this one. |

The 030 on my Blizzard card does run hot as well. But it's been running fine for about 10 years now, so apparently it hasn't taken that much damage. |

060 was a total cpu redesign and actually runs *cooler* than the 030 and 040. 040 is the hottest of the 68k family and if you get one then heatsinks and perhaps even a fan is recommended.
I would never put a PPC inside a standard-case A1200. The heat those things generate (even with a fan&heatsinks) is likely to decrease the general life-span of your Amiga greatly. They were simply NEVER meant to be installed inside a desktop case and I believe that's stated clearly in DCE's PPC manual? Last edited by dilinger; 25 April 2006 at 22:52. |

My Apollo 1260@50 runs fine with the trapdoor shut. I have no problems with the device.
The Taifun 1230@50 runs at about the same temperaturen. Haven't done any real measurements on that ofcourse. As for kick ass accelerators my guess would be the 060/PPC combo with the BVision. Cram that into a desktop and you have the ultimate 1200D. I'm not really into towering and such. |

BVision also generates some worrying heat by itself. PPC+BVision inside an A1200D = dead Amiga within the year...unless you are an air ventilation expert and know exactly where to place half a dozen industrial sized fans and holes at precise points to release heat from sensitive areas.
I wouldn't recommend that unless you have lots of money to literally "burn" |
