Amiga soundchip (Paula)

Hey guys,

Right - I'm currently in the middle of writing an article on the progression of music creation within games from the ZX Spectrum right up to modern day composition, but I'm hitting a little snag in the middle trying to find information on the Paula chip for the Amiga. There doesn't seem to be anywhere that really goes in to detail about it... All I know is that it's a 4 channel PCM based chip that allowed for 8-bit sampling.

Amiga really shaped my creative processes through sampling 8-bit sounds for use within trackers, but up until now I've never really seen the need to look at the technical side.

Does anyone know of any good places to search for details on it, or if they know anything more about it's development?

What did you want to know?

Paula is capable of 14-bit sample playback with a bit of fancy programming and non-standard use of volume.

Hey Alexh,

Thank you so much for attaching the document! - the information on it is exactly what I was after. Should hopefully finish the article today if all goes well.

Do you know where the doc was sourced from? Don't worry if not, I'll just add Abime on the footnote with your username.

Always been a bit of a sample-head myself, and own lots of Akai samplers still (12-16 bit). So it's nice to know that 14-bit's could be achieved on the Amiga!

It's quite interesting to see how they did roughly the same thing with the ZX Spectrum by modulating the noise generator fast enough that you could playback 4-bit samples.

It's from the Amiga Hardware Reference Manual, possibly 3rd Edition

Quite a lot of software has support for 14-bit playback.

AHI, Delitracker, Eagle Player etc.
