Odd DNS issue using RoadShow
Hi,
I have the latest Roadshow stack on my Amiga and have set it up for DNS. All works except trying to connect to my PC on the same WIFI network. From the Amiga I can ping the router, external internet sites eg google.com etc but when I try the pc with its name the DNS resolves as ending 135 when the pc is actually on x.x.x.200. I can ping my NAS server (another PC) with its name without problems. Things used to work, but the wifi dongle I was using in my PC died recently and I am using a different make, could this be the cause? I cannot understand why Roadshow is getting the wrong IP for just this PC and nothing else. Anyone any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

Probably the 135 was your old dongle and your router still has it cached with the name of the PC. Try to reboot your router.

Hi Thomas,
Many thanks for the suggestion, sadly resetting the router has not fixed it. Prior to the reset I was getting unknown error when I tried to ping the pc from the Amiga using the PC's name but this included the resolved ip address - now I just get the message 'Unknown host.' Pinging the pc from the NAS gave an IPV6 response to start with so I thought that might be it and disabled IPV6 on the pc. This gave and IPV4 ping from the NAS but still unknown host from the Amiga. The Amiga can ping everything else on the network by name - including my brother's laptop when he came over. It can also ping the PC using its IPV4 address - the one ending .200. I'm just baffled. |

Well, just put the PC's name and IP into Devs:Internet/hosts, then it doesn't need the DNS.

I then had a thought and simply swapped the dongle in the NAS with the one in the PC (the Amiga does not need to see the NAS, but its got a fixed IP in any case so would not be a problem if it did). This also worked, without the need to add the PCs name into hosts. I have no idea why, other than that there must be something very odd with the wifi dongle (its made by Tenda). Anyway I am now back up and running. Many thanks for all your help. |
