Format hdf larger than 1GB

I have created a hdf of 3Gb, but when I try to format it (in classicWB UAE version) the size is always under 1GB.

I simply right-click and choose format, is this right?

Partition hardfile? (not using hdtoolbox to partition it and "RDB" mode button not active)

If yes, make sure WinUAE does not complain about "Too many cyls" in hardfile panel. If it does, change for example "surfaces" value to 8. (this is "legacy" compatibility feature..)

Bit confused, do you mean I should be using hdtoolbox to partition it.

Also when i create the hdf in winuae it does say too many cyls, but how do I change "heads" value?

When I open hdtoolbox, all the buttons are greyed out and I can't click on them.

Where you select the HDF file in WinUAE config menu (F12). Under harddrives tab, select the hdf and click properties, then alter the heads there.

I dont remember seeing "heads", but if you alter "surfaces" to 8, winaue stops moaning, about the cylinders.

Correct me if im wrong Toni.

I made a 5GB HDF with the help of WinUAE and SmartFileSystem. Used AmiKit to format it. Worked as a dream, so now i have all WHDLoadgames from KillerGorilla on that HDF.

ma693541, can you explain in more detail of how you achieved a 5GB HDF.

When I create a SFS HDF of 5GB, it won't show up in AmiKit. (or any other workbench environment)

Odd, working here fine. I just created a 6GB and it showed up instantly in Workbench enviroment.

It does say the HDF is 0MB, but it still worked.

SFS and partition HDF isn't recommended combination.. (for example SFS tools appear to crash)

I managed to make a 5GB sfs hardfile.

When you create a sfs hardfile in winuae, under settings - FileSys: browse to "SmartFilesystem" file.

I found this info and the file from the Amikit website.
