Mouse and static

If you like to play with two players, you need to start a game with the mouse plugged and changed while the machine is running to a joystick.

In good case you only toast the 8520, because they are available until today, worst case is a killed Paula for right or middle mouse click. How can that be avoided? Is a simple y-cable for mouse and joystick suitable?

Okay, hot-plugging peripherals like that isn't nearly as risky as you think. First, static is dangerous for chips regardless of whether the computer is turned on or off, so if you're going to kill it that way, having the machine running makes no difference. The real danger when the machine is turned on is connecting peripherals with their own power supply, like monitors, printers, modems etc., or else shorting the 5V rail by inserting a metal-shelled connector wrong.

That said, plugging and unplugging constantly is annoying and can wear the connectors, so there are switcher units available to solve the problem. You can't use a simple splitter because the mouse movement lines will interfere with the joystick movement inputs. Circuits like this one will let you switch from joystick to mouse by pressing fire or left mouse button.
