Mainboard RAM vs. CSPPC RAM
In my A4000T I have a CSPPC board with 96 mb RAM installed while the mainboard does only contain the standard 2 mb chip RAM.
Would it be any good to install the 16 mb RAM on the mainboard or would the access of that RAM be too slow?? Also, would it make any difference if I changed the 2 x 32 + 2 x 16 mb RAM on the CSPPC to 4 x 32 mb RAM ?? I don't even know whether it is 70 or 60 ns RAM, how much speed difference would I get from making sure I have 60 ns RAM when the PPC CPU on my CSPPC card seems to be bust? |

60 ns are better, of course. 50ns better than anything (but hard to find).
If the PPC is dead (BGA CPU sucks, it is hard to replace) your board will act like a regular CyberStorm. The on-board 16Mb Fast are slow than the installed on the card, just give it a lower priority (good for memory-hungry applications, like the new OWB browser). |

I always have FAST RAM on my A4000's mainboard, but I have heard lots of people say the A4000 is faster without it.

What tool would I use to change RAM priorities?

I believe the motherboard RAM always has a lower priority than accelerator RAM by default (zorro RAM has a lower priority still).
Unless you are using more RAM than your accelerator has on board, you would never access the fast ram on the motherboard. The 60ns / 70ns refers to latency rather than read/write cycle time, so you will not see a (70/60)X increase in speed, but there will be some benefit. |
